PRODUCTION OF ANTIMONY LEAD,
ZINC TO BE INCREASED
BUJANOVAC ANTIMONY MINE TO EXPAND -- Slovenski Porocevalec, No 60, 10 Mar 50
After the liberation, antimony mines were opened east of the Drina River
near KrupnJe, and in the southeastern part of Serbia near Bujanovac, which is
close to Vranje. A large molybdenum ore mine is being opened in Mackatica.
The area of the Bujanovac mine is 60 square kilometers, but the mine itself is
only third in production of antimony in Yugoslavia. However, the ore of the
Bujanovac mine contains more antimony than the other mines. Large investments
are planned for the mine this year. A 15-kilometer ropeway, connecting all five
mine areas, will be constructed soon. Previously, the ore was shipped 40 kilo-
meters to the nearest railroad station.
In the near future the ore will have to be shipped only 6 kilometers to the
railroad. However, later on only antimony ore concentrate, and not the ore, will
be shipped, because flotation installations will be built at the mine this year
for separating antimony ore. From 32 tons of ore, one ton of concentrate will be
obtained.
The miners of the Bujanovac mine surpassed the 1949 plan by 19 percent.
This year a power line will be constructed between the power plant at Mackatica
and Bujanovac.
The Zajaca antimony mine in the Drina River ore basin has contributed greatly
to Yugoslavia's production of antimony The Zajaca mine is expected to produce 63
percent more ore in 1950 than in 1949 and twice as much as in 1948.
TREPCA MINE GETS NEW INSTALLATIONS -- Slovenski Porocevalec, No 61, 11 Mar 50
The Trepca lead and zinc mine in Serbia in 1949 expanded its smelting instal-
lation in Zvecan. It also installed six new furnaces. At present the mine is
constructing a large iron smelter, in which two huge furnaces will be installed.
This year a new refinery and flotation installation also will be erected.

The facilities of the mine itself are being expanded. Almost 500 meters
below the surface, a new level is being opened, where high-grade ore with a
large percentage of lead and zinc can be dug. Not far from the main mine, a
new mine at Mazici will be opened in 1950. The new smelter, which will begin
operation in the fourth quarter 1950, will help increase the production of
crude lead by 38 percent. The 1950 plan for the entire mine is one fifth
granter than the 1949 plan.
