The Tbilisi Electric Machinery Plant of the Gruzsel'elektro Trust has be-
gun pr.- luction of an improved hydroturbine. It is also making hydraulic equip-
ment for large hydroelectric power plants.
The Tbilisi Electric Machinery Plant has begun production of special blow-
ers for kolkhoz forging furnaces.
EQUIPMENT PLANT NEEDS WORKERS -- Sovetskaya Litva, No 28, 2 Feb 50
The El'fa State Electrical Engineering Equipment Plant needs the follow-
ing workers: mechanical, industrial, design, and electrical engineers and
technicians; lathe operators in all grades, mechanics, milling machine opera-
tors, grinders, truck loaders, and unskilled workers. Apply: Personnel De-
partment, Vil'nyus, ulitsa Shvidrigaylos, 33.
NEW PLANTS BUILT -- Sovetskaya Litva, No 48, 25 Feb 50
An electric motor plant has been built in Vil'nyus and a new plant for
casting sanitation engineering equipment has been set up not far from Vil'nyus.
Other large-scale plants for building electric motors are under construction in
Lithuanian SSE.

NEW LAMPS FOR COAL MINES -- Komsomol'skaya Pravda, No 309, 31 Dec 49
During 1950 the Kharkov "Svet Shakhtera" Plant will begin production of
daylight lamps for use in coal mines. These lamps are 100 times brighter than
the ones in use at present.
PERFECT FLUORESCENT LAMP FOR MINES -- Komsomol'skaya Prav'a, No 30, 4 Feb 50
First tests of daylight lamps at the Makeyevka Scientific Research Insti-
tute of Mine Safety showed that if the lamp broke, its incandescent electrodes
could cause a gas explosion in the mine. After long re earth and observation,
it was discovered that if high voltage is used, she arc discharge develops in-
stantaneously without preliminary heating of the electrode. If the electrode
does not heat, the lamp is safe for use in the mine. With this development,
the daylight lamp was made safe and practical for underground use.
The lamps are now being put up on permanent installations in the faces. A
portable daylight lamp which miners could use everywhere, in the drift, face,
or stope, is currently being developed. On the surface, the portable lamp will
resemble the storage-battery type, but it will have a much stronger and better
light.
MAKES HIGH-POWER BULBS -- Moskovskiy Bolshevik, No 23, 27 Jan 50
Four years ago the Zaprudnya Electric Bulb Plant made only caps for bulbs,
and was in effect nothing but a gl,.ss plant. Today it has new shops and ma-
chiner.r and is a first-rate electrical enterprise. It is currently engaged in
making nigh-power bulbs. Total output of the plant during 1950 will be double
that of 1949.
TEST NEW MOTOR -- Leningradskaya Pravda, No 12, 14 Jan 50
The Electric Machinery Plant imeni Stalin, Kharkov, has run successful
tests on a motor made for the Makeyevka Metallurgical Plant. Assembly of a
generator for the rolling mill has begun.

The Kharkov Electric Machinery Plant imeni Stalin will start series pro-
duction of new electric induction motors and will produce electrical equipment
for high-power excavators.
MAKE NEW WELDING TRANSFORMERS -- Vechernyaya Moskva, No 12, 14 Jan 50
In 1949 the Electric Welding and Heating Section, Academy of Sciences USSR,
working with manufacturing enterprises, produced eight new transformers, to be
used with alternating-current arc welding units. The academy plans to work
with plants during this year to develop new welding machines, and to study the
theory and practice of work estimates in utilizing the machines.
