This book traces the history of navigation aids from the earliest com-
passes, sextants, and chronometers to the present. It explains the use of
time signals in finding the latitude of a ship's position, and describes the
method of direction finding by radio and accurate location of points in
geodetic surveys by means of rythmic signals. The use of fixed transmitting
stations for direction finding, radio compasses, radio direction-finding ap-
paratus on ships and airplanes, radio altimeters, and radio bacon networks
are especially noted.
The book is too small to treat all aspects of the question and, of course,
does not include the newest instruments for military use.
