PHYSICIANS GET AWARDS
FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
According to a law passed recently by the East German government, teach-
ers who have rendered exemplary service in connection with youth education in
the schools will be awarded the title "Distinguished Teacher of the People."
Physicians who have distinguished themselves by outstanding performance of
duty or byeignificant scientific achievements in public health will be awarded
the title 'Distinguished Physician of the People."
The following physicians have been awarded the above title:
THUERINGEN -- Taegliche Rundschau, No 30, 4 Feb 50
Dr Albert Kukowka, born 25 April 1894 in Schrau, Silesia; at present,
physician-in-chief, Land Hospital,Greiz. As Thueringen's Commissar of Epidem-
ics, he has devoted himself to the combating of contagious diseases and the
reopening of curative baths and spas.
Dr Walter Peiser; born 18 August 1898 in UhlEtedt, Kreis Rudolstadt,
where he now practices general medicine. He also functions as district phy-
sician and fills various positions in the public-health system.
Prof Dr Jussuf Ibrahim, born 27 May 1878 in Cairo; currently professor
of pediatrics, director, children's clinic, University of Jena; and head,
children's hospital, Carl Zeiss Foundation, Jena. Has published many impor-
-? tart papers in his field.

Dr Hermann Lessing, surgeon, born 12 February 1885 in Stralsund; currently
physician-in-chief, Schwerin Polyclinic. Has worked untiringly for the expan-
sion of the polyclinic, which handles 1,600 outpatients per day and is the
largest institution of its kind in Eastern Germany.

Prof Dr Paul Heilmann, born 14 February 1888; currently director, Path-
ological Institute, Heinrich Braun Hospital, Zwickau. Many graduates of his

BRANDENBURG CHOOSES NEW MINISTERPRESIDENT -- Wirtschaft in Aufbau, No 24,
the German Democratic Republic. His post was taken over temporarily by Fal-
kenberg (fnu), Land Minister of Economics, until the Land parliament met and
unanimously elected Rudolf Jahn, Land chairman of the FDGB (Free German
League of Trade Unions) as the new Ministerpresident.
Jahn was born 4 November 1906 in Leipzig, the son of a metalworker.
a trade union and also the Communist Youth Union. In 19'29 he had an oppor-
tunity to visit the USSR. In 1931 he became Secretary for Agitation and
Propaganda for the Communist Party in Land Sachsen.
In 1933 he was arrested and sentenced to prison for activities leading
Solidarity in Land Sachsen and later adviser for education and cultural work
it the executive organ of the FDGB in Land Sachsen. In August 1948 he became

PASSES LAW GOVERNING NATIONAL PRIZE AWARDS -- Taegliche Rundschau, No 67,
70-71; 19, 23 - 24 Mar 50
1. For outstanding scientific achievements, important technical inven-
tions, and introduction of new working and production methods of great econ-
omic significance, a total of 30 awards consisting of five first-class prizes
of 100,000 Deutsche marks each, 10 second-class prizes of 50,000 Deutsche marks
each, and 15 third-class prizes of 25,000 Deutsche marks each.
the German people, a total of 18 awards, consisting of three first-class
prizes of 100,000 Deutsche marks; six second-class prizes of 50,000 Deutsche
National prizes may be awarded to any German, regardless of his place of
residence as well as to Germans having acquired another nationality as the
result of political emigration diring the Hitler regime. Awards will be made
by the President of the German Democratic Republic in a ceremony to be held
on 7 October of each year, beginning witn 1951. The date for the 1950 prize
awards is still to be determined.
In Mecklenburg, groups in all fields of endeavor were urged to partici-
pate in the selection of National Prize candidates for 1950. It was stressed
that preference should be given to activists. Among those proposed for the
1950 prizes for cultural contributions were Bert Brecht, Anna Seghers, Dr
Willi Bredel, Prof Wagner-Regeny (fnu), Prof Keller (fnu), Prof Dr Rienaecker
(fnu), Prof Dr Lemke (fnu), and Prof Horst Strempel.
The city of Zwickau has conferred honorary citizenship rights on the fol-
lowing:
Alfred Baumann, miner, for voluntarily raising his production quota from
4.8 to 5.2 cubic meters in 1949.
Kurt Wolf, worker in the building trade, for adopting and improving the
methods of Soviet and Polish building trade activists.
Prof Dr (fnu) Heilmann, for achieving world renown by his numerous scien-
tific contributions.
