GIVES COURSE IN WORK SAFETY PRECAUTIONS -- Slowo Polskie, No 29, 29 Jan 50
The Main Electrotechnical Institute in Wroclaw was the first to organize a
2-day course in safety precautions for electrical installations. Two hundred
and fifty delegates from all parts of Poland attended the course. Among them
were 30 engineers, 7 doctors, 120 technicians, 50 officials of BHP (Work Safety
and Hygienic Precautions), and workers from Wroclaw, Krakow, Katowice, Lublin,
Olsztyn, and Szczecin wojewodztwos. The course covered safety precautions and
first aid. Professors from the Polytechnicum, Wroclaw University, and the Medi-
cal Academy were lecturers.
Professor Skowronski, dean of the Electric Faculty of the Polytechnicum,
explained the variable resistance of the human body to electric current. This
resistance, under certain conditions such as dampness, drops and even a low-
voltage current becomes dangerous. Professor Doctor Popielski, vice-rector of
the Medical Academy, stated that if shock does not kill the person immediately,
it may impair the heart activity or the nerve center of the respiratory system,
causing death through suffocation.
Professor Kurdziel discussed the technical side of the electrical equip-
ment. In the USSR the limit of tolerance is 12 volts. In Poland it has been
42 volts; now it is 24 volts. A worker now most receive a written order for
each high-tension electric job so that in case of an accident, responsibility
may be ascertained.
Engineer Centkiewicz explained a new method of using a stream of water in
putting out an electrical equipment fire without shutting off the current.

tourists in the mountains. Managers of PTT's mountain shelters, who are experi-
