SAYS PEOPLE'S POLICE TO-BECOME DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'S ARMY TO BE MOTORIZED -- Svenska Dagbladet, No 96, 11 Apr 50 A large part of the East German Communist army is about to be motorized, it is reported in the Berlin newspaper Telegraf. The weapons and organiza- tion of the army as a whole indicate that it is designed to be committed. in a civil war between East and West Germany. The designation "People's Police" will soon be changed to "Democratic People's Army." This army has a disproportionately large number of officers and noncommissioned officers in relation to the number of enlisted men, and new officers and noncommissioned officers are being speedily tra_ned at several military schools in East Germany. One must therefore figure that the army could be greatly increased in strength by the recruiting of Communist- minded enlisted men. The East German army is already regarded as an even match for US troops stationed in Europe -- particularly since, except for high-ranking officers, the US soldiers, in contradistinction to the East Germans, have had no combat experience. Experts also consider the East German army in its present condi- tion, because of rigid discipline and unity, a considerably more powerful force than the French Army. ORGANIZES COMMUNIST RESISTANCE AGAINST ALLIES -- Svenska Dagbladet, No 94, 8 Apr 50 Paul Markgraf, former chief of police in the Soviet Zone of Berlin, is reported to have gone to the British Zone to organize Communist resistance against the Allies. The German and British authorities have sharpened their guard. It is reported from Berlin that it is not known where Markgraf is residing. CLASSIFICATION CONFIDF.NTT4i.
