The Sixth Conference on High Molecular Compounds, held in Leningrad.in
June 1949, was devoted to the general problems of the physics and chemistry of
natural and synthetic polymeric substances. Thirty-two reports were presented
on the following four stain topics(l)the mechanism and.kinetics of the forma-
Lion of high molecular compounds; (2) physicochemical properties of high mo-
lecular compounds and methods of investigating these properties, (3) the
structure of the -,ompounds and methods of investigating this structure, and
(4) the physics of high molecular substances.
About one third of all the reports presented were concerned with-the
first topic. Studies in this subdivision were presented by S. S. Medvedev and
his collaborators; Kh. S. Bagdosarlyan, P. M. Khomyakovskiy, and others; V. V.
Kc..rshak and his collaborators; M. F. Shostakovekiy; S. Ye. Bresler, and others.
Korshak also considered the matter of nomenclature of high molecular
compounds and the scientists of the group headed by B. A. Dogadkin reported on
work relative to the kinetics and mechanism of rubber.
Reports concerning the second topic were given by N. I. Nikitin, S. N.
Ushakov, I. I. Zhukov, P. P. Kobeko, V. I. Ivanov, A. G. Pasynskiy, Z. A. Ro-
govin, and others.
The structure of high molecular compounds was dealt with in reports pre-
sented by V. A. Kargin, B. A. Dogadkin, N. V. Mikhaylov, S. I. Sokolov, G. B.
Bartenev, and others.
The last topic was considered bX B. V. Deryagin and N. N. Zakhovayeva in
presenting the results of a completely new method for the investigation of
properties of films of high polymers and their solutions on the surface of
metals -- method of blowing off the films.
More than 150 delegates and guests took part in the conference. It was
decided to hold the Seventh Conference at the end of 1950.
