Shale began to be used as fuel for locomotives of the Leningrad Railroad
for the first time in 1949. The tens of thousands of tons of shale since con-
sumed in locomotive fireboxes have made it possible to eliminate long-range
transport of coal to Leningrad.
Recently, A. Vasil'yev, a lecturer at the Leningrad Institute of Railroad
Transport, and Candidate in Technical Sciences, worked out a mixture of third-
grade shale and lean coal for locomotives. This mixture is being utilized for
the first time and is giving a satisfactory performance.
Two years ago, shale was sorted by hand in the "Kiviyli" Shale Mine. At
present, electric drills are operated at the mine faces. This has resulted in
a 50-percent increase in the miners' labor productivity of the miners and a
reduction in the production costs of shale.
