A. Explanation'
This report presents a tabulation by scientific category of articles which
appeared during 1948 and 1949 in Soviet scientific and technical periodicals.
A list of the periodicals covered by this survey appears in Part C below.
The figures presented were determined in two steps: (1) an actual count
of the articles in all periodicals available (50 to 90 percent of the issues
of periodicals listed in Part C); and (2) interpolation of the number of
articles for issues not available. Due to the regularity of publication of
articles in certain categories, as found by actual counting, the figures ar-
rived at by interpolation may be assumed to be reasonably accurate.
The figures given in the tabulation cover 2-month periods for the years
1948 and 1949, with the totals for the entire 2-year period.
In the breakdowns of scientific categories, the following should be noted:
1. "Fuels and propellants" includes flame and combustion studies and
articles on lubricants.
2. "Industrial research subjects" includes articles on physical and medi-
cal technology.
3. "Agricultural research" includes soil studies and veterinary science.
4. "Biological warfare" includes only studies on antibiotics. No other
articles which pertain to this category were found.

Since this tabulation is limited to selected subjects, the figures presented
