In the first quar- ter, the volume of capital construction in republic construction pro,~ects on the whole exceeded the volume completed in the first quarter 1949. Freight transport by the Ministry of Automobile Transport Belorussian SSR in the first quarter 1950 increased 45 percent in tonnage and 33 percent in ton-kilometers over the same period of 1949. In comparison with the first quar- tei? 1949, passenger transport on city streetcar lines increased 38 percent. Sovkhozes. MTS, and kolkhozes F:^e better equipped for spring field work this year than-they were in 194;`. In the western oblasts, 45 n~v MTS have been organized. More than 13,000 trac- tor operators and tractor brigade leaders have been trained or have taken re- fresher courses in mechanization schools and at MTS and sovkhozes. The Pirst-quarter plan Por retail trade turnover was exceeded.
