The Statistics Administration Belorussian SSR reports that in the
first quarter 1950 gross production by industry in the republic increased
31 percent over the first quarter 1949, including 56 percent for Union in-
dustry and 21 percent for Union-republic, republic, local, and cooperative
ind~ txies. Individual ministries and organizations fulfilled the plan ae

In the first quarter 1~5U, the volume of capital construction increased
as Follows, in comparison with the first quarter 1949: 78 percent for Min-
istry of Timber and Paper Industry Belorussian SSR; 32 percent for Ministry
of Food Industry Belorussian SSR; 106 percent for Ministry of Meat and Dairy
Industry Belorussian SSR; 1?6 percent for Ministry of State Farms Belorussian
SSR; 20 percent for Ministry of Health Belorussian SSR; and. 79 percent for Main
Road Administration, Council of Ministers Belorussian SSR. In the first quar-
ter, the volume of capital construction in republic construction pro,~ects on
the whole exceeded the volume completed in the first quarter 1949.
Freight transport by the Ministry of Automobile Transport Belorussian SSR
in the first quarter 1950 increased 45 percent in tonnage and 33 percent in
ton-kilometers over the same period of 1949. In comparison with the first quar-
tei? 1949, passenger transport on city streetcar lines increased 38 percent.
Sovkhozes. MTS, and kolkhozes F:^e better equipped for spring field work
this year than-they were in 194;`. In the western oblasts, 45 n~v MTS have been
organized. By the beginning of 1950, the capacity of the tractor park in MTS

wcs 24 percent greater than at the beginning oP 1949. More than 13,000 trac-
tor operators and tractor brigade leaders have been trained or have taken re-
fresher courses in mechanization schools and at MTS and sovkhozes.
The Pirst-quarter plan Por retail trade turnover was exceeded. Retail
trade volume in March increased sharply over the February volume as a result
oP the reduction in pricee.
