IN ONPRODUANT / REPORTS LIVESTOCK, AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENTS IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA COMMERCIAL HOG SLAUGHTERING INCREASES -- Hospodar, No 9, 2 Mar 50 According to Statisticke Informace, Series V, No 40, of the State Statis- tical Office, the number of fattened livestock slaughtered in 1948 and 1949 was as follows: 1949 1948 Beef cattle 488,994 557,617 Bulls 140,663 107,022 oxen 55,663 62,344 cows 193,225 265,626 Heifers 99,443 122,625 Calves 394,267 514,707 Hogs 2,754,974 1,235,031 Commercially slaughtered 1,646,684 910,135 Domestically slaughtered 1,108,290 2,145,136 Sheep 62,455 72,721 Goats 22,361 25,456 The decline in domestic slaughtering of hogs is a result not only of the fact that free domestic slaughtering is dependent on fulfillment of delivery agreements, but also of the'disappearance of the black market, which had been supplied largely by home slaughtering. On the other hand, commercial slaugh= tering, i.e., slaughtering which supplies meat and fats to the urban popula- tion, rose by 80 percent. This is a.result of the effort to increase the num- ber of hogs, an effort which has been successful, since the Five-Year Plan tar- get figure has already been reached. Above all, this has been accomplished by the mass fattening centers, from which hogs are sent to be slaughtered.
