PUSH LAND RECLAMATION IN YUGOSLAVIA
SLATE HALF BILLION DINARS FOR 1950 WORKS -- Ljudska Pravica, No 91, 16 Apr 50
During the past 3 years about 65,000 hectares were reclaimed in Yugoslavia.
This year over half a billion dinars are earmarked for reclamation works. With-
in a few years, 50,000 hectares of land will be reclaimed in the Pelagonija in
Macedonia. Thus far 2,330 hectares of land have been reclaimed on Strumica
Polje in the same republic. The Vardar River Valley in Macedonia will acquire
a large irrigation network in the near future; the Radika River will be diverted
to flow into the Vardar River, which flows into the Aegean sea, instead of into
the Adriatic sea.
In Serbia the center of reclamation activity is in the Vojvodina, because
of the construction of the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal.
In Croatia reclamation will take place on Lonjsko Polje, Jelas Polje, and
Crnac Polje. Because last year's rice crops on the reclaimed section of Jelas
Polje were abundant, more rice will be planted there this year. Levees will
be constructed this year at Cr1Q.c Polje to protect the highway from floods. In
Dalmatia reclamation is continuing on the karst polje.
The karst poije in Herzegovina and the swamps in the Bosanska Posavina
also are being partly reclaimed this year.
The levee along Lake Skadar thus far has withstood five major floods. The
levee along the Moraca River also will protect large areas from floods. A rail-
road line will be constructed on it between Titograd and Bar.
The levee along the Bojana River will protect 3,200 hectares of land on
Ulcinjsko Polje.
Reclamation in Slovenia is taking place in the Prekmurje region.

STEP UP SLOVENIA RECLAMATION PROJECTS? Slovenski Porocevalec, No 86, 10 Apr 50
The largest scale reclamation work in Slovenia will take place in the
Psata area this year. Reclamation of areas near the villages of Depala Vas,
Trzin, and Menges, which began in 1949, id scheduled to be completed this
year.
A drainage canal, which was almost completed in 1949, will carry the water
into the Kamniska Bistrica River. In 1949, all six bridges over the new beds
of Psata creek were completed. About 1,000 hectares in the Psata arec. will be
protected from floods by the new drainage system.
Reclamation on the 800-hectare plain at Trzin and Depala Vas is especially
significant, as the development of a large farm is scheduled to begin there
this year.
1eclamation also will take place in the Lijak Creek area this year. Several
drainage canals have been built already. Other reclamation projects in Slovenia
are in the Prekmurje and near Kocevje.
The Slovenian government has allotted 40 million dinars for this year's re-
clamation projects.
CONTINUE FARM LAND RECLAMATION -- Slovenski Porocevalec, No 87, 11 Apr 50
A large portion of the Belje state farm is flooded and therefore not avail-
able for agriculture. For this reason, construction of a 28-kilometer levee,
which was begun in 1949 on the Drava River, is continuing this year.
The levee will permit the production of 14,500 carloads of wheat per year
on an area of 9,500 hectares of reclaimed land.
