PURGE CDU MEMBERS IN LAND SACHSEN -- Neue Zuercher Zeitung, No 1177, 5 Jun 50 Professor Hickmann, former leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Sachsen, and two CDU members of the Sachsen Land Diet, Rohland and Haentz- schel, have been expelled from the party by the CDU Land Executive. Hickmann, who was one of the most prominent bourgeois politicians in East Germany, was removed from his various offices at the beginning of 1950 be- cause he advocated the neutralization of Germany. The Communists now have finally deprived him of his last chance to return to, public life, man- . euvering the affair in such a way as to humiliate the CDIJ at the same time, since Hickman had to be ousted by his own political adherents. The Com- munist method apparently is to compromise the bourgeois party leaders in a manner which will make their own followers despise them.
