DRIVE TO EXTEND WASTE UTILIZATION
SET UP WASTE-PROCESSING PLANT IN WARSAW -- Gazeta Handlowa, No 17, 1 Mar 50
The first waste-processing plant in Warsaw has been built for the Bac-
util Central Office of Slaughterhouse By-Products in the outlying suburb of
Zeran within the limits of greater Warsaw.
The plant will dispose of carcasses of dead animals, and will collect
waste from the city's slaughterhouse for processing into fodder meal and in-
dustrial fats. The fodder meal contains four times more albumin than the
amount found in grains. Industrial fats are much in demand by. the soap and
cosmetic industries. Adequate decontaminating measures will be taken to pre-
vent the spread of infectious bacteria from areas handling contaminated sub-
stances. Carcasses of animals stricken by infectious diseases are sterilized,
and the horns, Hoofs, hair, and skin segregated for processing elsewhere. The
fat is separated and the remains are processed into meal.
The plant will employ 30-40 workers in three shifts. It will.. be activated
in August or September 1950. Approximately 2,000 tons of waste will be proc-
essed annually. The plant will serve Warsaw Powiat and adjacent rural districts.
-In the fall of 1950, an albumin. factory now under construction at the site
of the plant will start production. The factory will process about 1,700 tons
of blood yearly. Albumin is used in the production of plywood.
The waste-processing plant and the albumin factory will occupy an area of
2 hectares. Until the necessary installations-are set up, Bacutil will use its
own well and sewage system.
The Beton-Stal enterprise began construction of the plant in September 1949.
Because of labor competition it was finished ahead of schedule.
Heretofore, 2 tons of slaughterhouse waste have had to be buried daily in
Warsaw. Poland needs at least 100 waste-p,ocessing plants.

RUDA PABIANICKA TO GET LARGE PROCESSING PLANT -- Dziennik Lodzki, No 85,
26 Mar 50
A large new Bacutil waste-processing plant will be set up on the site of
a former tannery in Ruda Pabianicka, with installations for dehydrating ani-
mal blood and converting it into fodder meal. The fodder meal will be sup-
plied to state farms, the-Central Meat Office, and the chemical industry.
There will be special equipment for drying and processing hog bladders,
which are exported to Bulgaria, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the US.
Rennet used in the production of cheese is extracted from hog bladders.
Bristles and tails of animals will be cleaned and dehydrated at the Bacutil
plant.for the upholstery trade. In addition, ears of animals and the remains
of hog hides will be fermented for the production of gelatine and glue.
The Bacutil plant till start operations on .1 October 1950.
TO ENFORCE WASTE UTILIZATION -- Zycie Warszawy, No 96, 6 Apr 50
It is estimated that waste and garbage accumulated in Poland's major
cities in one year contain 30,000-60,000 tons of metal, 25,000-45,000 tons
of bones, 45,000-90,000 tons of paper, 15,000-30,000 tons of rags, 15,000-
30,000 tons of broken glass, etc.
For proper processing of waste: from the meat, leather, lumber, metal,
and other industries, the State Economic Planning Commission has issued a cir-
cular which requires all its institutions and enterprises to turn waste over
to the Central Office of Usable Waste, or to the Central Scrap Iron Office.
Noncompliance with the order will be punished. The State Economic Plan-
ning Commission is to be notified of each case of negligence.
SCORE FAILURE TO COLLECT BONES -- Trybuna Ludu, No 62, 3 Mar 50
Many tons of bones, which are badly needed by the fertilizer and chemi-
cal industries are not being collected.
Two organizations in Warsaw are responsible for collecting bones, the
Central Office for Waste Collection and the Powiat Union'of Village Coopera-
tives. They have agreed to coordinate their collections from restaurants,
but so far have failed to do so.
