THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION FORESTS ADM2RIS7AATION PROMOTES INSECT EXTER2~ffNATION ?Since the end of the war, the State Forests Administration has been con- ducting an intensive campaign against insect pests, especially "kornik-drukarz" ~oleoptera, probably myelophilus pinniperdaJ, found in nearly all of Poland's spruce forests. 't'he energetic measures taken in 1946-48 have checked the harm- ful effects of these insects and prevented a ma~ar calamity. The fight against "barczatka-sosnowka," awood-boring caterpillar threat- ening pine trees, has also registered good results. The Forestry Research In- situte has recently discovered a new birdlime for caterpillars far superior to those previously imported. One of the largest insecticidal programs ever undertaken in the history of Polish forestry was that against tent caterpillars (Acantholyda nemoralis). These insects threaten forests extending over thousands of hectares in Krakow, Slack, and Lodz woJewodztwos. The infested areas were dusted by aircraft with calcium arsenate. The Ministry for Forestry provided six double-engine trans- port aircraft. The dusting campaign started in 1943 and will continue until completely satisfactory results are obtained. In 1949, 600 tons of calcium arsenate were used foxy dusting operations. Since the larva'of tent caterpi7ti lays survive 2 years in the soil, 3 years are needed for complete extermina- tion. Air-borne dusting will be used in 1950 .against another harmful insect, the liparis monacha, which has been causing great damage to pine trees in molmtain forests.
