ORGANIZE NAVAL SECTION OF PEOPLE'S POLICE
EAST GERMAN NAVAL POLICE EXPANDED -- Dagens Nyheter, No 179, 7 Jul 50
The East German government is at present feverishly engaged in organizing
a naval section of the so-called people's police. Some time ago it was learned
that a naval police administration had been set up under the direction oY the
Ministry of the Interior. No information on the incipient organization of the-,,.
naval poli::e has been made available. On the other hand, it has been reported '
that the new formation has as its function the protection of East German shipping
itdishtheuSoviets~nintent onito turn overEthe pstr ollcingsof thismpart ofdthetBale
tic Sea to the East German authorities.
A nucleus for the nascent East German naval Police organization has existed
for the past 6 months in that seagoing people's police have had the mission oY pre-
venting refugee traffic to Sweden and Denmark. Tne new naval police organization
represents an expansion of the already existing organization. It is too early to
tell. how strong the East German naval police will be, but there are certain indi-
' cations that it will be large.
It is known that the Soviets have already provided the East Germans xith 12
torpedo 'boats taken over by the former from the remains of Hitler's fleet. They
have received an additional n~ber of minesweepers and motor torpedo boats. A
program has been drawn up for the construction of 120 new vessels next year.
.The new vessels are built as trawlers, with a length of 38.5 meters, a dis-
placement of 400 tons gross, and a speed of 9 knots. They are so designed that
they may be very easily armed and converted into naval patral boats. The first
order for 60 of these vessels has been placed with the people-owned shipyard at
Stralsund. How soon this order may be filled depends on the delivery of engines --
at present there is a great shortage of suitable engines:
The training center for the navel police will be at Wustrow, in the vicinity
'"4r3,,,pf Rostock. poring Nazi times, the best firing range for antiaircraft art111ery
wps~.located there. Another training center will be at Greifswsa.d, where, from all
indications, the training of officers will take place.

Available information indicates that the seagoing forces will be based at
the ports of Wismar, Warnemunde, Rostock, and Stralsund. The fant units will be
stationed at Zingst and Liepe, which were bases for the German motor torpedo boats
during the war.
Recruiting for the naval police started only a few days ago. Detailed in-
formation on the scope of the personnel requirement is still lacking. First of
all, an attempt was made to muster in personnel .with *evious naval service. A
number of such men are said to be already available ~.e., lists were presumably
drawn u~. Former naval personnel were as sought after as former Luftwaffe
personnel.
The establishment of the naval police, of course, has been on Soviet order.
The official report of the new branch of the police service followed on the heels
oY the Soviet declaration of the Baltic as a "closed" sea.
When the East German naval forces are completely organized it will be they
with whom the Swedish Baltic fishermen will have to deal if they stray into "for-
bidden" waters. Possible Swedish protests to Moscow can then be readily brushed
off with "those measures were taken by the East German government; speak to the
authorities in Berlin."
This places Sweden in a diplomatic dilemma, as she has extended neither de
facto nor de Sure recognition to the East German government.
TO SET UP PIAVAL POLICE ALONG BORDER -- Morgon Tidningen, No 160, 17 Jun 50

motorized. The appropriation for the people's police, therefore, has been in-
creased by nearly 50 percent.
PEOPLE'S POLICE LEARN TO OPERATE STREETCARS -- Taegliche Rundschau, No 158,
9 Jun 50
Recently, female members of the people's police have been seen operating
streetcars on the Potsdam streetcar line while, on the other hand, streetcar
drivers conducted the traffic.
