NEED OF QUALITY TUBES FOR TELEVISION SETS
In recent years our radio industry has put out several television models.
In Moscow and Leningrad, where television centers operate regularly, there are
a large number of commercial and amateur television sets. Each owner has a
right to expect long uninterrupted service from his set.
As we all know, the reliability of radio apparatus depends first of all
on the quality of its parts and tubes. However; in this respect, matters are
far from satisfactory. For example, the G-411 tube is most often used in line
scanning. Frequently, this tube is not available in the shops. However, the
main trouble is not scarcity but the fact that a large percentage of these tubes
are of very poor quality. The Central DOSARM Club obtained 20 G-411 tubes.
When tested in the "Leningrad T-1" television set and the "Moskvich T-1," 25
percent were found to be unsuitable.
The main defects of the G-411 tube are: poor quality of the glue in the
base, insufficient exhaustion, and considerable variation of parameters. In
spite of'very careful handling, the base soon comes off; in operation, the tube
often becomes gassy; and the considerable variation of its parameters makes it
unsatisfactory for use as a sweep generator due to the appreciable fluctuations
in the line frequency and high voltage on the picture tube. As a result, the
line frequency often gets beyond control limits and it becomes necessary to
select different circuit elements for each individual tube. Moreover, the G-411
does not have a standard base and the tube panels for such bases are not on
sale.
Through the pages of the Radio, we appeal to the Ministry of the Communica-
tions Equipment Industry and to the collective of radio tube plants to take up
the question of improving the quality of tubes for television sets, particularly,
sweep generators and output tubes for systems with separate generators. It is
essential that all these tubes have standard bases.

Considering the rate at which television is developing, it is not possible
to defer solution of problems connected with the production of quality tubes
for television sets. Solution of these problems will relieve the radio amateur
of hunting for tubes for his television set and will free the television repair
shops from having to send out their expert personnel to change radio tubes which
have become defective before the expiration of the factory guaranteed period.
