CANTON REORGANIZES ITS CH'U
On 24 June 1950, the Canton Municipal government r::organized its munici-
pal ch'u (-i TE.,) and suburban ch'u (~f ., ). The following data gives
the name of the ch'u, its population, and its composition.
Ta-tung (), 71,911. Consists of the former Ta-tung Ch'u, Tung-
shan Ch'u (t J-i Ig. ), and Chien-chien Ch'u (1!) ii . & ). Mostly residential
and some business areas.
Yung-han (. & i& ) 126,155. Consists of the former Yung-han Ch'u
and Tung-ti Ch'u ( Y ). All business area.
Hui-fu ( A,7 ), 133,698. Consists of the former Hui-fu Ch'u and
Ching-hai.Ch'u ( IL ). All business area.
T'ai-p'ing ( ), 116,147. Consists of the former T'ai-p'ing Ch'u
and Chen-yang Ch'u I ). All business area.
Ch'ang-shou (c.. ), 151,458. Consists of the former Ch'ang-show
Ch'u and Hsi-ch'anl Ch'u including the areas a st of K'ang-wang
Chieh-chih ($L' _:L i.. 4i south of Ssu-lung Ta-chih (It:1, It J4~J ), and east of
the first alley ( - r ), San-sheng (.- . ). Thickly populated. Small
business and residential areas.
Li-wan (t ), 64,960. Consists of the former Huang-sha Ch'u
( 'J ILL, ), and Feng-yuan Ch'u ( ice % 1 . ), includ areas east of Lung-
ching-hsi-lu (, if ~d7 W), up to Feng-shui-chi ( , ) . ? Residential area,
small business and handicraft industry area.
Yueh-hsiu ( L ), 1}1,244. Consists of the former Hsiao-pei Ch'u
Te-hsuan Ch'u (4%, ' ), and Hsi-shah Ch'u (,V J-I in-
cluding areas from south of Te-ni-lu (40 9(~) to east of Hsin-ch'iao Ta-tih'
(Ji0k J),

Ho-nan (=ij 1 ), 135,514. Consists of Meng-sheng Ch'u ( 7 L. ),
Hung-te Chu and Hai-chIuang Chu ( s ) adjacent to south
shore of the Chu Chiang ( * ;L ). Small business and industrial area. Meng-
sheng has a small suburban area, Chi-li-ts?un (, but no rural areas;
therefore, it was placed under a municipal ch'u>
Chu-chiang (l~ ), 44,802. No changes. Covers all river areas. Most
residents live in houseboats,.
Sha-mien Control Office (;')A I It *04), 1,903. Organized from the former
Sha-mien Chu Office (4 f u&PI ), Beautiful residental section atop hill; many
foreigners reside there. Foreigners not included in population figures.
Suburban Ch'u
There are no changes for Li-chiao Chu (,t % Ls ), Fang-ts'un Ch'u
( $4 L ), Hsin-chou Chu ( *I ), Sha-ho Ch'u (;r;oj ), and San-
yuan Chu ( _ k, _ ).
Shih-p'ai 4 Consists of the former Shih-p'ai Ch'u except
Mei-hua-ts'un ( c, . ) and-Tung-shan (qt J.I ) which were incorporated
into Ta-tung Ch'u ( L ) because they have residential areas.
Hsi-ts'un (-ibf ), 40,1.39. Consists of suburban areas of Nan-an Ch'u
(47 LIA,) and Hsi-shan Chu ( f Ji JX_ ), including areas under control of
U ) Chih office
Tsai- un ch'iao (#j -Ax ~j), and Liu-hua-ch?iao
( ~J ); suburban area of Feng-yuan Ch'u including San-sha
and area controlled by Plan-teang Chih Office ( 3I~3 ,'i); and
suburban area of Hsi-ch?an Ch'u (,ib L. ), namely, area under control of
Hsiao-mei Chih Office ('l' 1 Alf ,). Mostly farmers live here. Hsi-ts'un has
large factories.
