THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION RESEARCH CENTER PRODUCES ANTIBIOTICS PRODUCES CATTLE-PLAGUE SERUM -- Nodong Sinmun, 17 Dec 49 The National Livestock Health Research Center near Pyongyang conducts research, carries out experiments, and manufactures various types of drugs for the prevention of livestock epidemics. This research center now occupies new buildings recently built at Taesong San, Imwon-rayon, Taedong-kun, P'yongan Namdo. The livestock experimental farm is equipped with large buildings to house the experimental cattle, immunized cattle, healthy animals, and the most modern experimental facilities. Kim Chang-ch'un, a scientist and party member, who has been working on cat- tle-plague serums, succeeded in producing serums, in July 1949, for the first time in the northern half of the People's Republic of Korea. His valuable ac- complishment is attributed to his extensive application of the advanced Soviet veterinary science techniques, and also to his serious study. The tests proved that Comrade Kim's serums required noticeably less in- jection time than ordinarily required, and the serums proved to be of excellent quality. The quantity of serum scheduled for production during 1949 was attained by September, and all of the quantities needed in each province were distributed during November. At present, Dr Kim Chong-hui, director of the National Livestock Health Re- search Center, and Kim Chong-hwa, director, of its Pathology Department, are jointly engaged in research on the processing of "ka-t'o-hwa-tok" (domestic rabbit chemi- cal poison), fc-hemical vaccine for tularemia. Kim Yon-sik, director of its Chem- ical Research Department, and Chang Chae-sun, director of its Bacteriology Depart- ment, have made notable accomplishments in the research for improvement of quality of mallein and "pi-cho-kyun-aek" (non-millet bacterial fluid) for the protection of the health of the military horse.., The National Livestock Health Research Center expects to expand its research facilities during 1950 with construction of additional buildings.
