According to well-informe.d circles, labor offices in East Germany have
hired. 800 workers and specialists for the Wismar shipyards within the last 2
weeks. Assembly-line construction of submarines is to be started on 1 August
19,0? It is also reported that. the Zeiss Plant in Jena has already started
production of telescopes and other optical equipment for submarines.
Many of the shipyarl workers hired. believe that the submarines will be
for use of People's Police Naval Units stationed in Wismar and Rostock. How-
ever, in Berlin it is thought that these submarines are being built to be sent
to the USSR as reparations and for export.

People1e Police prevented a bus carrying 32 children from Leipzig, vacation-
bound. for West Germany, from crossing the zonal border. The bus driver was
forced to take the children to a. children's home in Wartha, East Germany. He
was accused.by the People's Police of trying to kidnap the children, motivated
by his greed for personal profits.
