Enterprises of the Ministry of State Farms are increasing the output of
machines for the electrification of kolkhoz production.
A Ural machine plant of the Zapadno-Kazakhstan Oblast has more than doubled
its production of wind electric motors this year. The Tambov Machine Plant has
started to produce new portable electric power plants which occupy a little more
than one square meter of space and weigh less than 1,200 kilograms; they are
powered by a 9-horsepower Diesel motor.
The Tambov Machine Shop of the Ministry of State Farms, USSR has produced
an experimental portable electric power plant which is powered.by a 9-horse-
power Diesel motor and has a generator with a 4.5-kilowatt capacity. It is a
small apparatus, ' meter long, one meter wide, and 1.4 meters high. It can be
used in field conditions for threshing, grain cleaning, milking, shearing, and
pumping water.
Tests of an experimental gas generator electric power plant which operates
on green wood have been concluded at the Forest Technology Academy imeni S. M.
Kirov, The tops and branches of various tree types can be used as fuel when
still green. The gas generator assembly was developed under the direction of
S, F. Orlov, a lecturer at the academy.
The plant is simple to mazmfacture, light in weight, and has simple parts.
The first series of this power plant mil be produced by a factory in Riga for
timber regions of the country,

In the Moscow Electric Power System there are hydroelectric power plants
which are automatically operated. Automatic reports on the condition of
equipment and the load can be obtained by telephone. A man on duty visits
the plant and inspects the equipment once every 24 hours or even less fre-
quently. At the end of 1951, all regional power plants will operate auto-
matically.

During 1950 and 1951, USSR's Ministry of Power Plants resolved to equip
all its hydroelectric power plants now operating and under construction with
automatic control apparatus. All information pertaining to the condition
and working order of the equipment may be obtained by telephone through the
"automatic reporter," an electronic device. With the exception of two or
three persons at the distribution board, there are no other employees at the
plants.
Small hydroelectric plants are equipped with automatic equipment which
turns the machinery on or off depending on the water level.
With a view to making peat practical as fuel for small rural electric
power plants, a group from the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute for
Fuel developed a UTG-5-45 gas power generator designed for supplying gas to
a 45-horsepower motor. Tests showed that the gas generator could use peat
with nearly 35 percent moisture content and 18 percent ash content. One
and one half kilograms of peat were consumed per horsepower, which is half
that used by similiar power plants. The purifier of the gas generator is
dependable and simply constructed.
An interdepartmental committee ander the chairmanship of the director
of the Institute of Heat and Power Engineering Academy of Sciences Ukrainian
SSR, has recommended this gas generator for production and it is likely that
the construction of 20 or 30 interkolktioz peat-fired electric power plants
will be started in the Ukraine this year.
PLANT PRODUCES ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT -- Leningradskaya Pravda, 8 Apr 50
The Karaganda Repair and Machinery Plant of the Ministry of Electric Power
Plants makes steam and water em:ipment fur boilers, acid-proof equipment for
chemical water cleaners, spare parts for turbines, and special ladders for
repairing high-voltage lines under load. In March, it mastered production of
regulating valves for automatic feeding of water to boilers and yesterday sent
some of these valves to electric power plants in the Moscow area. The plant
makes up to 300 production types for electric power plants.
