Chungking, 24 A~~gust -- The increase in the movement of commercial goods
in the southwest this year is shown by the rise in transport figures. and-the
expansion of the area covered by the movement. Data of the Yangtze River
Transport Bureau reveals that t e traffic is export goods rose from 22,648
tons for the February April per~od to 58,757 tons for the May-July period.
Import goods traffic rose from 18,232 'tons to 33,442 tons in the correspond-
ing period. The above figures cover only goods carried by steamers.
A similar rise was registerer? for ,junk. and highway transport. Another
index of the increase in movement is remittances for payments. The Chungking
branch of the People's Banl: handled 198,600,000,000 yusa of remittances in
the first 4 months of the year and 976,300,000,000 yuan during May through
Ju]y . .
With the slowing down of purchases of industrial raw materials by Th~siland
and signs of repletion on the part of mainland buyers, as well as dumping of
futures., except for a few indispensable items the >ffirket is stagnant. A ship-
ment of sulfide ores ordered by local buyers at 600 Kong Kong dollars per ton
is ezpected in port ear]y in October. An order has been placed for German
arsenic crystals et 0.92 Kong Kong dollars per pound. Yesterday, a deal was
closed on the market for 20 tone of South African sodium arsenate at 80 cents
a pound: Considerable quantities of various chemical fertilizers have been
included in transactions.

The embargo placed by the Hong Kong authorities on the export of tires for
military use created a teulporary-slump in the local tare market. Hoxever; it
has been discovered that the prohibition does not apply to 34x7..and 32x6 tires,
and so a~number of shipments of these have. already been sold., `?
