INCREASE UTILIZATION OF WEATHER FORECASTS -?- Leninskoye Znamya, 4 Jul 50
Weather conditions affect nearly all branches of the national economy.
The study of weather, changes, their effect on the national economy, and
weather prediction is carried on by the Karelo-Finnish Main Administration
of Hydrometeor.ological Service. However, the benefits of this institution
have been insufficiently utilized.
Practice has shown that various economic activities can best be carried
out when weather forecasts are consulted. For example, civil aviation can
operate only when the forecast is for favorable weather. During May, the
civil aviation plan for transporting goods was exceeded by over l? times.
The forecast for an early ice break up on rivers made it possible for the
directors of the Southern Karelo-Finnish Timber Trust (Yuzhkarelles) to speed
up work in preparation for floating timber. Moreover, the fish industry,
guided by forecasts, had no shipwrecks and lost no fishing equipment during
May.
On the other h0nd, .all organizations do not make use of the service's
benefits. The republic agric?iltural experimental station in Impilakhti set
out tomato plants on 20 May, even though the weather forecast stated that
plants easily frostbitten should be planted later. Consequently, these
plants were killed by frosts occurring on 28 May..
It is hoped that the Hydrometeorological Service will be more fully
utilized. If this in done, the service itself can be improved.
