1 Peiping, 21 June -- Self-propelled and Stalinets-6 trailer harvesting com-
bines were put into use of 19 June 1950 on the experimental farm of the agricul-
tural machinery school of the Ministry of Agriculture near Peiping. These ma-
chines have just been received from the USSR. The school is the largest operated
for the training of students in the use of agricultural machinery. The farm has
2,400 mou, of which 630 mou are in wheat and 900 mou in cotton this year. Horti-
culture, gardening, and stockraising are also carried on. The most modern tech-
hiques and mach.nery are employed in all phases of the training.
Last winter, 500 students who had been selected from the mechanized experi-
mental farms thorughout the country were given intensive training in tractor oper-
ation. They were graduated in March 1950 and returned to their own areas for
service. At present, the school has 317 student enrolled among whom are 32

TO ATTEMPT AFFORESTATION -- Shanghai Ta Kung Pao, 29 Jun 50
Nanking, 28 June -- A conference of provincial and municipal forestry offi-
cials and representatives of the forestry departments of six universities in the
area convened recently in Nanking to study forestry problems and make plans for
the future. A representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the
national government was also present.
The conference planned for investigation teams to visit the various provinces
before the end of July to inspect forestry conditions.
The climate in East China is favorable to afforestation. Reports reveal
that at.present only 7.9 percent of the land of the area is covered witn forests,
although 273,173,215 mou of .land are sutiable for afforestation-in.. the area (ex-
cluding Taiwan). The conference recommended planting trees on 675,000 mou in
1951, as well as placing 2,160,000 mou of mountain areas under forestry reserve
status. The conference drew up a 5-year afforestation plan to be presented to the
national authorities for approval.

TRAINS WOMEN TRACTOR OPERATORS -- Shanghai Ta Kung Pao, 24 Jun 50
Mukden -- At the Te-tu Hsien Rural Normal School in Heilungkiang, ten
women are learning to drive tractors under the instruction of the first woman
tractor driver in China. Over half of them are already able to handle trac-
tors by themselves.
At 25 farms for disabled veterans, operated by the Northeast Disabled Veterans
Administration, 120 tractor units (according to Soviet reckoning 15 horsepower is
considered one unit of tractor power) and over 600 new type agricultural implements
have been put into operation in the spring work season. By 5 June, over 75,000 mou
had been planted. In Sungkiang Province, over 20,000 mou of virgin land have been
put under cultivation.
The Veterans Administration has released 30 billion Yuan (Northeast currency
to the various projects as aid in the production program. Nine hundred modern
horse-drawn implements were manufactured in the disabled v^terans machine Shope
and put into use on the various farms.
dIn spite of their disabilities, many veterans participate in the agricultural
enterprises of their stations. Some of them have improved their implements so
that they have been able to double the amount of ground that can be plowed in a
day. This spirit has been a large factor in increasing the amount of land under
cultivation this year.
Wu-hsi -- The following instructions have been promulgated concerning the
use of public grain, the collection of which is being delayed until autumn by
the South Kiangsu Field Office.
1. The decision of the government to suspend the summer collection of public
grain and combine it wi.th the autumn collection was entirely in the interests of
the farmers and to increase the production of autumn crops. All the people should
recognize the practicality of the government's move and turn this public grain,
the collection of which is delayed, into agricultural capital to promote the pro-
duction program set for the autumn grain collection.
2. All of this grain should be used to increase autumn production. It
should not be eaten or otherwise wasted. The people must support the government
so that South Kiangsu's production may be returned to normal and expanded. This
will result in raising the standard of living of the peasants.
3. Government agencies on all levels must carefully explain the plan to the
people so that it will be impossible for special agents to spread deceptive rumors.
If such rumors appear, they should be explained to the people at once.
