NEW ENTERPRISE TO CONTROL POLAND'S MERCHANT MARINE; SHIPPING, TRANSSHIPPING STATISTICS REPORTED MINISTRY CREATES POLISH SHIP REGISTER -- Warsaw Monitor Polski, 17 May 50 On 21 March 1950 the Ministry of Navigation and Transportation created the new state-owned enterprise to be known as the Polish Registry of Ships with headquarters in Gdansk. The Registry will classify all ocean-going and inland navigation ves- sels and will supervise the construction, alteration, and repair of such vessels. It will appraise vessels and will be responsible for any work re- quired for classification and appraisal, including technical supervision, technical specifications, estimation, and registry of damages. For ocean-going vessels, the Registry will issue regulations govern- ing safety, the condition of electrical equipment, anchors, boilers, dimen- sions, etc. On inland waterway vessels, it will perform technical services for the Ministry of Transportation in connection with dimensions and patented features. The enterprise will be under the supervision of the Minister of Naviga- tion acting in agreement with the Minister of Transportation. It will have a Council for Public Supervision, whose activities will be defined by the Council of Ministers at a later date. MERCHANT MARINE NEARS 50 SHIPS -- Gdynia Mlody Zeglarz, Jan - Feb 50 As of 1 January 1950, the Polish merchant marine fleet numbered 48 ships with a gross tonnage of approximately 21.5,000 tons as against 38 ships with a gross tonnage of 120,000 tons in 1939. In late 19494 the-Polish government also purchased from Holland the gen- eral cargo motorship Bug of 641 dead-weight tons. The Bug, built in 1939 by N. V. E. J. Smit en Zoon, Scheepswerven, in Westerbrock, Holland, is 51.5 meters long and 8.3 meters wide. A 450-horsepower diesel engine enables the vessel to exceed 10 knots. The Bug has been placed on the Gdynia-Stockholm route.. It has a crew of eight. In 1948, Poland launched seven merchant vessels with a total gross reg- istered tonnage of 7,935 tons.
