THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
The three epidemic 3iseasey in East China are kale agar, bubonic plague,
and achietosoma ,japonicum (Japanese blood fluke fever). Not including Taiwan,
East China ha=_ 14,408 doctors, 814 dentists, 411 pharmacists, 4,982 nurses,
3,421 midwives, 176 skilled medical technicians, 9,246 semiskilled technicians,
30,465 teds, srd 157 hsien health centers.
East China needs 51,796 doctors (now there is only one doctor to every
2,000 people), 2,703 dentists, 12,457 pharmacists, 252,414 nurses, 21,750 mid-
wives, 64,173 skilled medical technicians, 248,150 semiskilled technicisns,
613,022 beds (there are only five beds to each 1,000 patients), and 255 hsien
health centers.
Shanghai -~ Since the liberation and up to the end of April 1950, 5,122,772
persons hsve received inoculations against various dlseases in Shanghai. They
include the following: 3;631,352 against cholera; 992,172, smallpox; 283,772,
typhoid-paratyphoid; 211,901, diphtheria; 2,972, antirabies; and 603, typhus.

prND$ pLAGUE VIRUS IN RATS -- Hankow Chekiang Jih-pao, 23 Jul 50
The antiplague campaign. in Ch'u IIsien, Chekiang, was started on 29 June
1950. Examination of dead rate revealed that 30 percent had bubonic plague
virus which could start an epidemic in this area.
Spraying of DDT and destruction of flea-bearing rats ie being pursued in
earnest The hr_ien government requested the provincial government to send an-
tiplague vaccines for preventive inoculations.

The Infectious Diseases Hospital in Ning-po gives the following data for

Nanking -- A_n encephalitis epidemic is now ravaging Nanking. The first
case oY the disease was reported at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in mid-
May 1950. By ~?uly, the number increased to 20 cases. Other patients, mostly
children, found in o+.her hospitals have already been transferred for treatment
to the Infectious Diseases Hospital.. The fatality rate of this disease is
known to be about 70 percent.. However, since the discovery of anew medicine

tendent of the Nanking University Hospital, the fatality rate has been reduced
considerably
I~he new medicine was tried on eight child patients and seven recovered
from the disease. Since the medicine is expensive, it is still not being used
widely to treat encephalitis.
134 SCRUB TYPHUS PATIENTS IN CANTON HOSPITAL -- Hong Kong Hsin-tao Jih-peo,
24 Sep 50
Canton, 23 September -- Since the outbreak of the scrub typhus epidemic in
Canton, there have been 130 patients confined in the Fan-pion Hospital. Fifty
cases were reported in Yueh-hsiu Ch'u, 25 in Yung-han Ch'u, and others were re-
ported in Nan-an, P'an-tang, Tung-shan, Hsi-kuan, and Hui-ai-tong.
The following countermeasures were taken in Yueh-heiu Ch'u from 16 'to
20 ieptember~ On the 16th, mess meetings were called to teach preventive and
treatment methods; on the 1'jth, 18th, and 19th, inspectors assisted by civilian
team captains made inspections of houses, and work-relief units sprayed DDT,
cleaned streets, swamps, and ditches. Also on the 19th, all doctors in the ch'u
held a consultative meeting, and three liaison stations were set up to make sur-
veys and do research. On the 20th, Dr Chu Ju-lung of Fan-pien Hospital gave a
lecture on the causes and treatment of scrub typhus. The Canton government sup-
plied the ch'u with DDT and rat traps.
Shanghai -- Before the liberation, Shanghai had 150,000 opium addicts.
Since the liberation, the number has decreased to 30,000. Similarly, before
the liberation, Shanghai had 2,235 prostitutes. This number hae been decreased
by 1,235,
DRUG ADDICTION GASES TRIED IN SHANGHAI -- Shanghai.Hsin-wen Jih-pao, 5 Jul 50
Shanghai -- According to the Shanghai Public Security Bureau, 968 cases of
drug addiction or drag trafficking were arraigned before Shanghai people's
courts from January to May 1950. In connection with these cases, 1,893 persons

FIND MARIJUANA SMOKERS IN TOBACCO FACTORIES -- Nanking Hain-hua Jih-pao,
19 Jul 50 '
Nanking -- Recently, the Nanking tax bureau agents uncovered several
cases of marijuana smoking by xorkere in the city's tobacco and cigarette fac-
tories. Dried leaves and Ploxers of hemp are smoked in cigarettes by these
addicta~ The bureau has informed its branch office agents to be on the look-
out for such addicts. Local cigarette unions xere asked to describe the:dam-
aging effects of marijuana smoking to their 'members.
