SOVIETS AID ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY -- Dairen Lu-ta Jen-min LTih-pao, 15 Aug 50
Within the 5 years following the liberation, the plants under the ~uriadic-
tion of the Sino-Soviet Far Eaet Electrical Industries Corporation have pro-
gressed by leaps and bounds, with the assistance of Soviet comrades. In May of
1947, when the former Kwantung Electrical Industries became the Far East Elec-
trical Industries, there were only 12 production units at the plant, and they
were engaged strictly in the production of glass, cement, light bulbs, and elec-
trical motors. By 1949, the facilities had grown to include more than 20 units.
The number of worlanen, rose frcm 3,000 to 13,654 between-1947 and the end of
June 1950. The plant now manufactures over 100 different products.

The most outstanding achievement in recent years is the rebuilding of the
Metals and Machinery Plant from the ruins. In 1947, the plant turned out only
a few products, such as scales, meat grinders, and expansion rings. In 1949,
the plant began to manufacture 5-ton overhead cranes, rubber machines Lma-
chinery for rubber industry ,hod cars for mines, and sundry automobile parts.
The number of workmen has risen from 450 to over 3,000.
The Soda Plant has also developed rapidly during the past 2 years. Pro-
duction for 1950 is three times of 1949.
Two small-scale furnaces at the Cement Plant resumed operation on 9 April
1950 after having been idle for 5 years. The plant's present daily production
capacity is 150 tons of cement. The plant had filled its production quota for
the whole of 1950 by 5 August.
Soviet comrades have contributed considerably to China's industrial re-
construction. Modern Soviet equipment, made in 1949, has been transported to
some of the plents. The machine shop at the Metals and Machinery Plant has
been equipped with lathes, planers, polishing and milling machines, and other
machinery from the USSR. These machines are all the most recent models and

Additional new-type machinery is expected from the USSR. The construc-
tion of an electrically powered coal hoist at the Glass Plant will soon be
completed.
