DIRECT BEET CROPS TOWARD SUGAR PRODUCTION -- Budapest, Friss UJsag, 23 Aug 50
The official Hungarian gazette :dagyar Kozlony, recently published a :scree
on the consumption of sugar beets which specifies that domtstic and imported
sugar beets 'say only be used for the production of sugar, except when the Min-
ister ui' Light Industry gets prior permission from the Minister of Agriculture
to use the beets for other purposes. The grower is required to turn over hie
entire crop to the sugar-refining enterprise, regardless of whether a contract
so providing has been signed or not. A crop whibh has been contracted for i'
turi?ad over according to the terms of the contract. The Minister of Agricul-
ture and the Minister of Light Industry determine the terms under which excess
sugar beet3 are to be turned over to the factories. It is unlawful to remove
beets from?the ground before the expiration of a designated period of time af-
ter the crop is thinned. To insure the purity of sugar beet seed, the Minis-
ter of Agriculture may order the removal of certain plantings even after thin-
ning. '
UP CANNING INDUSTRY OUTPUT QUOTAS -- Budapest, Vilagossag;' 19 Aug 50
The scheduled production of dried fruits in 1950 will be 23 times that o#'
last year.. Canned vegetable production will be increased 28 percent, canned
tomatoes 80 percent, canned fruit ,juice 58 percent, and'deep,frozen foods will
be increased 57 percent.
This year's production of canned meat will be more than 4 times that of
1949, attd canned fish production will increase 19 percent.

In the second half of 1y50, the clothing industry will exceed its plan by
180,000 articles of women's liner. clothing; 100,000 articles of bedding;?129,000
boy's and g~rlls coats; 212,000 boy's suits; 15,000 dresses;. 17,000 men's over-
coats; 330,000 shirts; 57,000 suits; 50,500 trouar,.rs; 57;000 short ,jackets; and.
25,000 women's hats. '

The production of the leather and shoe industries will be significantly increased
this year. Many Factories will install. conveyor belt, production lines this year,
including the Duna-Tisza, the Bonyhad, and Szombathely factories. A production
line is already in operation at the Bortext factory. The new methods cut produc-
tion time from the previeus 4-5 days to 10-12 hours. Additional machines and in-
stallations will be added to improve production and to cut production costa.
