START PREPARATORY WORK ON NEW METALLURGICAL PLANT -- Potsdam, Maerkische Vol:xs-

According to information from the Lain Administration for Metallurgy of the
Ministry for Industry in East Germany, a new metallurgical plant, with ten furnaces,
will be built wear Calbe on the Saale for the production of pig iron.
Preparatory work for the plant has already been started. Domestic fuels will.
be used in the production process, and the ore to be processed will come solely
from domestic ore deposits, which will be exploited within the framework of the
Five-Year Plan
The first battery and its ore-processing and roasting installations will be
completed in 1951.
COMPLETE OPEN-HEARTH FURNACES AHEAD OF SCHEDULE -- Berlin, Die Wirtschaft,

The second open-,eah furnace in the newly built Brandenburg Steel and Rolling
Mill has been complet l dnd started operations on 14 September 1950, ahead of
schedule.
The turd open-hearth furnace was put into operation on 12 October 1950,
7 weeks ahead of sche-4ule.
It is planned t0 complete construction and start operation of the fourth,open-
hearth furnace by 21IfDecember 1950 (Stalin's birthday), ahead of schedule.
TO ERECT NEW IRON AN~ STEEL PLANT -- Berlin, Nachrichten fuer Aussenhandel,
23 Aug 50 .
A new iron and steel plant with a 500,000-ton pig iron capacity will be erected
near Fuerstenberg/Ober. A sheet-metal factory with a 150,000-ton annual capacity
{s to be added to the plant. The plant will employ 12,000 workers, including office
personnel and it is planned to build dwellings for 30,000 people in the Tluerstenberg
and.Schoenfliessarea.

BLOOMING MILL TO START' OPERATIONS -- Berlin, Die Wirtschaft, 1 Sep 50
The first blooming mill to be added to the people-owned Riesa Steel and
Rolling Mill is 90-percent completed and will start operating in October 1950.
Steel ingots of up to 2 tons can be rolled in this mill.
