They are recovering metal and shipping it for resmelting to the "Krasnyy metallurg" Plant in ~iyepaya and have already re- covered the first 400 tons of iron scrap. Recovered steel beams are being used successfully at the port for rigging. APPEAL TO PUBLIC FOR METAL SCRAP -- Alma-Ate, 22 Aug 50 The public is asked to collect and deliver to the "sel'po" (rural con- sumers' society) and procurement office of the rayon consumers' union ferrous and nonferrous metal scrap, including old samovars, teapots, pane, boilers, and other types of metal scrap. LAG IN SCRAP COLLECTION -- Vil'ayus, Sovetskaya Litva, 15 Sep 50 A reader reports from Vil'nyus that many enterprises in the city are not meeting the state scrap procurement plena. The Vil'ayus Electric Power Plant and the city's industrial combines are dumping scrap instead of collecting and delivering it. Even such large-scale enterprises as the Lithuanian Railroad System and those of the Ministry of Communal Economy are ttot meeting the scrap delivery plans despite the fact that they all have great reserves of machine parts designated as scrap. Leningradakaya Pravda, 23 Sep 50 An engineer from Leningrad asks why there.is no organized collection of metal scrap in the city since there is so much of it lying around, both in the city itself and in the suburbs. Pipes, beams, rails, beds, and other steel, cast iron, and iron objects are left lying around without being collected. Alma-Ate, Kazakhstanskaya Pravda, 8 Jul 50 A reader complains that collection of scrap in the Kazakh SSR is not well organized, citing Pavlodar Oblast as an example. Great quanititiea of worn-out agricultural equipment are dumped throughout the oblast, while scrap collection, given in the city of Pavlodar, has not been organized. The metal scrap left over from the construction of the bridge across the Irtysh at Pavlodar in 1949 has not been collected. The same situation prevails at the railroad station. The republic office of "Glavvtorchermet" (Main Administration of Procurement and Sale of Ferrous Metal Scrap) should organize scrap collection in all cities, villages, and large railroad stations.
