HUNGARY SPEEDS WAR PRODUCTION AND TRAINING; .DISCONTENT AMONG FACTORY WORKERS REPORTED CONSTRUCT WAR PLANT CENTER IN BORSOD BASIN -- Munich, H4ngaria, 20 Oct 50 Because of its physical characteristics, the 8orsod basin has been as- signed as important role for war production plants.. U~diosgyor '"D" assembly plant was put into operation early last month, and sasembly of armor and weapons parts manufactured at Diosgyor is already under way. A large number of the 11,000 workers employed at the Usdiosgyor arms, munitions, and war materiel.plant are youths. A village housing 5,000 has been constructed for the young workers. The recently completed ]25,000-kilowatt power plant at Dioagyor is now supplying electricity for all the factories in +.he vicinity of Miskolc, and the Barcika plant now supplies electricity only for Sa,jovolgy mines and fac- tories. A cement plant has also been built between Diosgyor and the Miskolc switchyard to supply cement primarily for the construction of factories. The railroad car repair shop at Miskolc is being transformed into acar- manufacturing plant, and asix-story munitions plant is being built into the side of Torman-teto mountain at Sajoba5on}r. Excavation for the plant was begun in 19+9 and now only the concrete work remains to be do.'ze. A nex military sir training field was recently completed at Sa~okapolna. Pilots in training here will perfect their training in the USSR. The situation is serioul3 in plants producing war materials where expediting brigades called "plant triangles" can get no more additional ~ production out of the harried workers by threats or by displaying "champion worker" signs. During World War II w;s p1eWt officers were usually older officers retired from the front, but now they are State Security Authority (AVH) political com- missars. AVO paper uses AVO and AVH interchangeabl,~ henchmen armed with tommy guns searca every worker as he enters and leaves the plant, to prevent sabotage or espionage. SOVIET COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF APPOINTED FOR HUNGARY -- Stockholm Morgon Tidningen, 15 Nov 50 Graz, 14 November -- According to the Austrian newspaper Steyrerblatt, a Soviet officer has been appointed commander-iL-chief of the Hungarian Army. The newspaper stated that the new commander-in-chief, Stefan Bartta, was born in Russia and received his military training there. It added that he was formally discharged from the Red Army and transferred to the Hungarian Army. RESERVISTS CALLED FOR 3 MONTHS' TRAINING -- Munich, Hungaria, 20 Oct 50 Following the distribution of new military identification papers indicating political reliability, thQ interviewing of military reservists was begun in September. Those who pass this screening, also, are eligible to be called for 3 months' +.raining. The first group to be called, artillerymen, armored units, technicians, and 20- and 21-year-old recruits, received orders to report by 1 October. By the end of their 3-month training period, a new group will re called. Although the State Security Authority is supervising military induction, many fail to report for duty. This is especially true of new recruits, who either hide at home, or escape to the West. 350,000 ORGANIZED INTO WOREOs'RS' MILITIA -- Munich, Hungaria, 10 Nov 50 Vienna sources report that upon express orders from Moscow, worker masses in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Rumania, and Bulgaria, now apparently complete]y indoctrinated with Communism have been organized into militia units for the "Peace Front." After speeches by Matyas Rakosi and Mihaly Farkas, the 29 September con- fidential ministerial conference ordered the induction, arming, and training of 350,000 workers. On 1 October workers' militia units were organized at every industrial site and wor:shop employing more than ten persons, and 3 days later the training of well over 300,000 men began. Day after day, from 1800 to 2000 hours, the workers undergo the same basic training as partisans. Saturday afternoons and Sunday evenings, State Security Authority office-~9 instruct croups of 100 in military and industrial counterespionage. Officers training the workers' militias have been trained in the USSR since spring 1948? The new military organization is called the "Work and Defense Association," and consists of 100 brigades, which are divided into six comman:is. Simultaneously with the formation of the Work and Defense Association, there was created a "Citi- zen's Defense. Authority" which now occupies a four-story building on Marko Utca. After certain military exer- cises, the men listened to a speech by Lieutenant General Farkas on the neces- sity of armed preparedness. PURGE RANR3 OF "WARRIORS~FOR LIBERTY" -- Munich, Hungaria, 27 Oct 50 It is reported from Vienna that Hungarian Communists have organized a Matyas Rafiosi brigade to support Soreaa Communists. At the same time, a large-scale purge has been begun in the Warriors for Liberty Association, malty members oP which are joining the Communist partisans. After reviewing the reports of the county secretaries, Adam Gubis, head of the organization section, decided that the ranks of the Warriors for Liberty should be purged and tightened up. At present, morale has sunk to such a low level that on1y.10-20 percent .oY the ~aembers attend the 90-hour basic training course, aria rust in-the racks, and weapons have been stolen.
