HUNGARIAN PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FIVE-YEAR PLAN gumbers in parentheses refer to appended sources./ The Five-Year Plan gave the pharmaceutical industry, along with all other industries, a new impetus. The development of the pharmaceutical industry was aided by the creation of a Central Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and the formation of special groups, charged with solving certain difficult problems. A brief description of the more important pharmaceutical establishments and their main products follows. Chinoin This house, founded in 1910, has become the most important pharmaceutical plant in southeastern Europe. Numerous raJearch specialists are working inces- santly on the solution of problems of pharmacology and organic chemistry. With the collaboration of leading chemists, Chinoin has succeeded in preparing many specialities which are used in human and veterinary medicine. Human Medicine -- Novurite, Novatropine, Bilagite, Medobis (all have been on the market for 10 years); Ultraseptyl (sulfamethylthiazol); Vitaplex P (ru- tin); Hexalgone (a synthetic with the characteristics of morphine); and Tebam- inal (antiphthisic with a p-aminosalicylic acid bake). Veterinary Medicine -:- Distol (antidistomiasis); Neo-Todorit (for the pre- vention of piroplasmosis and cocidiosis in cattle); Ultraseptyl ad us. vet.; Kebal (antiascaridic and antimacracanthorhynhyque gic%);.Vermitan (antipara- scaridic, vermifuge); and some new preparations, Septrol (antidysenteric for calves and new-born pigs), Ultrabor (elastic bougies to prevent the retention of fetal sacs), etc. - 1 - CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL ? There are departments of biological and pharma- ceutical research, chemical laboratories, and a section to study the therapeu- tically active principles of plants. The most modern methods of manufacture are used in this factory. The efficacy of Gedeon Richter products is recognized by international medical and pharmaceutical publications. The factory has made great progress since the end of World War II and the construction of new instal- lations has permitted the production of a long list of very important prepara- tions. Products: Only the most recent hormones and organotherapeutic preparations are listed here: Glanduitrine (standardized extract of the posterior lobe of the hypophysis); Syntestrine (propionate of diethylstilbene); Glanducorpine (synthetic hormone of the corpus luteum); Glanduantine-Ch (gonadatropic hormone of the chorion); Perhepar (standardized liver extract with proteins removed); and Thrombofort (isolated thrombin, local coagulant) which is the latest Richter preparation. After World War I, the manufacture of pharmaceutical products was started; since then, the Theosan preparations have become world-famous. Synthetics were started in 1930, and the first product was Vestine, an azopyridine dye, which is used even today. The study of sulfona- mides resulted in the production of Dicalmine which is used for rheumatism. In late years, the research laboratory has been ekperimenting with sympathomimetic substances (Sympathomine, Broncholyeine) and in the related field of chemistry and biochemistry (methinonine, glutathion, ergosterone, etc.). Under the Five-Year Plan, the factory is increasing the extraction of al- kaloids from native plants (chelidonine, etc.). The installation of new ma- chinery will triple production by the end of the plan.(1) Dr Egger When the house was founded in 1696, the number of products was very limited. Its well-equipped laboratories now produce a long list of very remarkable spe- cialities. The main preparations are Revival (an arsenobenzol of high spirio- olcidal efficiency and low toxicity), Dynarsen (a compound of five-valent ar- senic for treatment of all stages of syphilis), Eggosalil (an amide of salicylic acid), and Hydrocodine (a derivative of codeine, with multiple effects, for se- rious cases), The Dr Egger plant also prepares products for radiology: Cholumbral (for choleocysticologY), Litbudbral and Neo-Renumbral (for retrograde and intravenous pyeolography), etc., and also Afungil (antimycotic) and Relaxil (a synthetic re- laxant for muscles, used in surgery).(1) Magyar Pharma This firm manufactures a long list of preparations used in human medicine, including Polybe (a mixture of B Vitamins) and Lostazote (an agent used to com- bat lymphogranulomatosis). The production of the firm covers the domestic needs and permits large export of Vitamin C and efficacious untisyphilitic drugs.(1) The plant also produces pyramidon tbl 0.10 g and pyramidon tbl 0.30 g.(21 50X1 -HUM - 3 - CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/09/27: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600370208-0 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/09/27: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600370208-0 CONFIDENTIAL CaFIDENTIAL Phylaxia Phylaxia is the name of the State Serotherapeutic Institute which was founded b-r the fusion of all serobacteriological laboratories and plant:3 in the country, some of which have been working for over 4o years. Phylaxia produces all serobacteriological preparations which are employed in human and veterinary medicine. Many new preparations have been produced as the result of the ex- haustive work of the research laboratory. The .section for human medicine pro- duces sera, vaccines, diagnostics, common lysates of bacteria, and also precip- itated diphtheria anatoxin, Typhylax (precipitated antityphoid vaccine) precip- itated tetanus anatoxin, and scarlet fever-whooping cough and diphtheria-whoop- ing cough vaccines. For some time, Phylaxia has been producing Meinicke, Kahn, and Citichol antigens as well as an Anti-D serum (Anti-Rho) prepared from human blood to determine the Rho factor. The most important veterinary products are sera for fighting hog cholera and erysipelas, Carre disease in dogs, anthrax, poultry plague and cholera, sheep pox, rabies, and also produce bovine and poultry tuberculin.(1) Alkaloids Janos Kabay, a Hungarian pharmacist, succeeded in extracting raw morphine from poppy stems. His process was adopted by the Alkaloids Factory, estab- lished in 1927. From the outset, the factory was able to supply the domestic market with all needed alkaloids. The plant was enlarged in 1937. After this date, it was possible to export 90 percent of its production of crude morphine, pure morphine, hydrochloride of morphine, and sulfate of morphine; pure codeine, hydrochloride of u.deine, and sulfate of codeine; pure eth.imorphine and hydro- chloride of ethylmorphine; and pure diacetylmorphine and hydrochloride of diac- etylmorphine. All products are tested several times in the laboratories of the plant. Alkaloida now exports to 24 countries. The factory follows minutely the dispositions of the Geneva Convention and the formulas of the pharmacopeia of the importing countries.(1) In addition to the firms listed above, the following are also engaged in manufacturing pharmaceutical preparations. E. Gy. T. Pro-acts: Atropin sulf. inj. 0.05%; atropin sulf. inj. 0.1%; atropin cult. tbl 1/3 mg; calcium lacticum tbl 0.25; carbo. med. tbl 0.25 g; Eucarbon tbl; Germicid kup; Hydrocodin tbl; Karil kup.; Karil tbl; Meristin tbl; Meristin kup.1 Lukulin dgr.; phenacetin tbl 0.5 g; theobromin jodeti drg.; and theobromin jo- dati c. papaverino drg.(2) The firm also manufactures Vermifuge candy.(3) Medichemia Products: Enterosolvens natr. sal. tbl 0.5 g.(2) Medichemia also manufac- tures chocolate vermifuge.(3) Gyogyert Products: Sulfoguanidin tbl 0.5 g.(2) All Hungarian pharmaceutical factories check their products in their own laboratories before offering them for sale, and, in addition, the specialities , are tested quantitatively and qualitatively by the Hungarian Institute of Pub- lic Hygiene. The institute also takes samples from the preparations which are on the market and tests them. The preparations are also checked continuously by a clinic.(1) - 4 - CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL 50X1 -HUM Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/09/27: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600370208-0 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/09/27: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600370208-0 1 CONFIDENTIAL SOURCES 1.
