STUDIES NATURAL RAW MATERIAL FOR PRODUCTION OF VITAMINS
The All-Union Vitamin Scientific Research Institute is engaged in studies
of the wild-growing forest plant Hyppopha@ rhamnoides (oblepikha). The berries
produced by this bush contain 170-180 milligrams of Vitamin C and 10 milligrams
of Provitamin A (carotine) per 100 grams of crude material.
On being kept on the bushes until they freeze, the berries acquire a
pleasant flavor and an odor resembling that of pineapple. The plant, which is
widespread in Siberia and the Altay region, has been cultivated by the insti-
tute at an experimental field located in Vorontsovo village, Leninsk Rayon of
Moscow Oblast'. The first yield of berries was obtained last year. At present,
the seeds of this crop are being distributed for the growing of young plants
and for mass cultivation in suburban areas of Moscow and Leningrad.
The institute has also brought to light a special kind of pumpkin raised
by the Biryuchikutsk Experimental Station in Rostov Oblast'. This pumpkin has
a high content of carotine, reaching up to 20 milligrams per 100 grams of crude
material. The vegetable in question was cultivated at the Krasnodarsk Experi-
mental Station of the All-Union Vitamin Scientific Research Institute. The 300-
ton yield obtained in 1950 was converted at the Krasnodarsk'Vitamin Combine.
The technology of this type of production has been developed agd will be ap-
plied extensively this year by enterprises of Glavvitaminprom'(Main Administra-
tion of the Vitamin Industry.)
