BIOGRAPHICAL DATA ON HUNGARIAN COMMUNISTS
Before the war, Hegyi was an official of the Budapest Waterworks and the
coach and later vice-president of the Social-Democrat "Vasas" soccer.team. He
retained both positions even when, on the order of the ministry of the Interior,
the name "Vasas'ITT.Bad to be changed and the soccer club was forced to become a
social association. At the end of 1946, Hegyi played the club into the hands of
the Communists, at an election meeting and the "Vasas" has been a leading Com-
munist association sice 1947.
This act paved the way forHegyi to rjoil the Communist Party, and he later
became director of the National Sport Office with the rank of state secretary.
Gyula Hegyi's elder brother, Imre Hegyi was relieved of this position during
',thsa course of the social democratic purges.

State-Secretary Gyula Hegyi, President of the National Sport Office, has
beenrarrested?and'taken to Stalin ut 60A Ten days after he disappeared, Hegyi's
family was notifiecj that he was in the hands of the. BAH. It is reported that
the arrest of Aegyi marks the beginning of the liquidation of.the entire peoples'
sport front. Sport leaders are in a state of anxiety because it.is well known
that Hegyi knew nothing of politics and never interfered in political affairs.
Thus, the arrest of other leaders on any pretext can be expected momentarily..

Julie, rrd.ei, member of the executive committee of the Vacz District douncil,
can hardly read or write. In. 1943, she informed on Miksa Po],Onyi, Budapest busi-
nessman, who had escaped from a train bound for Russia and was hiding in,Budapest.
Polonyi was arrested and was not seen again. Following the Russian occupation,
Julia Erdei had been employed by a steel mill where she engaged in agitation ac-
tivity and later became a Stakhanovite, After,a long search, a relative of Polonyi

discovered Julia Erdei and reported her to the authorities. However, she was
released by the party after 2 days detention and continues her party activi-
ties as the vice-president of Vacz chapter and member of the national board of
presidents of MSZT (Hungarian Soviet Society).

In 1949, Istvan Kiss had no idea he would be elected a member of the Ka-
rad council. Since he was not inclined to give his land to the kolkhaz, the
local party organization began to harass him threaten him, with imprisammmt.
However, he was put up for election by the party in 1950 to show that "the
independent peasant is with us, too." The cooperative gathered Kiss' crops in
August, and he spent his time appearing in propaganda tour`s and giving speeches
on how good the lot of even the "restionary" peasant is in Hungary.
