The following ministries and administrations fulfilled the gross produc-
tion plan, but failed to fulfill the plan for quantity of production of the
items indicated: Ministry of Local Industry -- steel, wire, threshers, separ-
ators, cultivators, irornrare, enamelware, aluminum ware, porcelain and pottery
ware, cotton fabric, hosiery, leather soles, leather uppers, and confectionery;
Ministry of Light Industry =- unfinished cotton and linen fabric, cotton and
linen fabric; Ministry of Construction Materials Industry -- cement, gypsua.
gas concrete blocks, and drainage pipes; Ministry of Local Fuel Industry --
peat drying aad production of peat briquettes; Ministry of Timber and Paper
Industry -- carved veneer, plywood, sulfite pulp, matchvood, matches, turpen-
tine~and logging; Ministry of Food Industry-- groats, canned goods, vodka,
and citric acid; Ministry of Meat and Dairy Industry -- bone glue snd ice
cream; Ministry of Fish Industry -- fish catch; Council of Industrial Cooper-
atives -- cotton, wool, and part-wool Pabrice; knit outerwear, footwear,
leather soles, aluminum ware, confectionery, attd soap.

Fifty-two percent of the 1950 plan for completion of new housing was
.fulfilled.
The number of workers and employees in the republic increased 5 percent
during 1950?
The 1950 plan for placement of graduates from trade, railroad, and FZO
(factory plant training) schools was fulfilled 100.2 percent.
Auring 1950, Soviet Latvia achieved important results in all branches
of socialist culture. At the end of the year, the number of students in
higher educational institutions, technical schools, and other specialized
educational institutions, as well as primary 7-year schools end secondary
schools, was higher than in 1949?
Compared with 1949, tr_e number of beds in hospitals, maternity
hospitals, and other medical institutions, increased and the hospitals
were enlarged. The number of physicians increased considerably.
The republic completed 96 percent of the 1950 plan for commodity
turnover, including 96 percent by the retail trade system and 97 percent
by pU`viiC eating ciatcrpriG.^..-,.

Soviet trade continued to expand in 1950. The lowering of prices on
1 March 1950 increased the purcheaing power of the population. During 1950,
there xas an increase in the sales of animal fats and dairy products, meat,
fish, poultry, sausage, margarine, sugar, confectionery, garments and knitwear,
silk fabric, and leather footxear.
Compared with 1949, there was an increase in the ssle of the following
farm products In kolkhaz markets: flour, groats, vegetables, eggs, poultry,
butter, potatoes, milk, and honey. Prices for farm products in the kolkhvz
market continued to arop in 1970.
