The consolidation of kblkhozea, carried out in 1950, has created conditions favorable to more intensive and more prod- uctive utilization of machine-tractor stations, and to a more uniform distri- bution of labor resources in the kolkhozes. In 1950, kolkhozea reaped a greater harvest and kolkhoz workers obtained more grain per workday than in previous years. Belorussian kolkhozes and sovkhozes completed the state plan for grain procurement from the 1950 harvest. They have exceeded the state plan Yor sowing winter crops for the next harvest. In 1950, sowing of winter crops on kolkhozes increased more than 100 percent over 1949. Machine-tractor stations completed 35 perce~ more plowing than in 1949. The republic's kolkhozes have exceeded the prewar level in all types oP productive cattle. The Ministry of Automobile Transport Belorussian SSR fulfilled the 1950 freight haulage plan 97 percent in tons and 93 percent in ton-kilometers. In 1950, the ministry increased its haulage 34 percent over 1949 (in tons) and 33 . percent (in ton-kilometers). The 1950 plan for passenger transport on city streetcar lines was fulfilled 113 percent and the plan for passenger-car runs, 117 percent. Passenger trans- port in 1950 increased 25 percent over 1949, and passenger-car runs increased 34 percent. The Administration for ,Utilization oP Small Rivers for Transport, Council of Ministers Belorussian SSR, fulfilled the 1950 freight haulage plan 84 percent in tons and 110 percent in ton-kilometers. In 1950, the administration increased freight haulage 15 percent in tons and 23 percent in ton-kilometers. In 1950, sales of food and industrial goods to the population increased tre- mendously over 1949. The volume of retail trade turnover in 1950 considerably exceeded the 1949 volume. Trade organizations of the republic fulfilled 98 per-. cent of the 1940 plan for retail trade turnover. Consumers' cooperatives exceeded this plan. In 1950, sale of agricultural products on kblkhoz markets continued to rise. Considerably more meat, milk, butter, eggs, potatoes, and other products were sold than in 1949. Prices on many products in kolkhoz markets decreased below 1949 prices. In 1950, the network of 7-year and secondary schools increased 11 percent. The number of students in the fifth to seventh grades of 7-year and secondary schools increased 25 percent in cities and 31 percent in rural areas. In 1950, 18 percent more students completed secon- dary schools for working youth than in 1949, 8nd 25 percent more students coa- pleted 7-year school for working and rural youth. At the beginning of the 195a-51'school year;, enrollment in higher educa- tional institutions and technical schools is the republic (including corres- pondence schools) was 6 percent above the 191+9 enrollment. All higher educs- tional institutions (including correspondence schools) prepared sad graduated 29 percent more highly skilled specialists,than in 1949. Teachers and peda- gogical institutes prepared 32 percent more teachers of senior grades of 7-year aad secondary, schools than is 1949? The network of medical iitsdtitutions and their capacity increased in 1950. The number of sanatoriums increased 12 percent aad the number of beds in sana- toriums increased 6 percent.
