Coal losses during actual mining operations were reduced from 31 percent
in 1948 to 19 percent in the third quarter of 1950 in mines oY the Kuzbassugol'
Combine. Cosl louses iu the proknp'yevek-Kiselestsk': area, where, Yor the most
part, thick, steeply dipping seams are mined,wez'e.:luced from 34.3 Percent to
21.2 percent. These results were achieved by z~egulating existing systems of
mining :pith caving of the side rock and by introducing systems oY mining with
backPilling of the worked-out area.
An analysis shows that coal losses decreased as follows in 1950, as com-
pared with 1948, when steeply dipping seams were worked by a mfertom 31i5cpe~rcent
caving of the side rock: using the shield method oY minergent to 18.3 percent;
to 26 percent; using the long-pillar method eft to.21.8 percent; using they
using the eloping-layer method, fromercentpto 16.8 percent.

From the above data it is clear that the moat widespread methods of working
thick, et22ply dipping aFama with backfilling of the worked-out area are the
horizontal-layer and the sloping-layer methods which account Yor 59 mine fai:cs,
or 65 percent of the 90 mine"faces under discussion. However, the co~ribution
of these two methods to the coal output.differa': Although, taken together,'they

the sloping-layer method accounts for 44 pxcent.
