INCREASE PASSENGER AND FREIGHT RAILRCAD SERVICE
OPEN RAILROAD BRIDGE TO TRAFFIC -- Berlin, Nacht-Express, 1 Feb 51
After 8 months of construction, a new railroad bridge over the Saale River
near Burg Goseck was opened to traffic. The Berlin-Eisenach express was the
first train to cross the bridge, which had been destroyed during World War II.
The entire Jueterbog-Neudietendorf route has now been double-tracked. A new
welding process, instead of the customary riveting, was used in the construction.

STEPS UP MOVEMENT OF FREIGHT -- Berlin, Fahrt Frei, 15 Dec 50
In November, 1,318,970 tons of freight were carried '~y the 756 heavy-
freight trains, an average of 25 trains per day, operated oy the Berlin sector
of the Reichsbahn.
Compared with October. the number of freight trains run 4ncreased by 23.7
percent and the tonnage, 57.1 percent. All freight locomotives of the sector
were employed to achieve this end. During the first 5 days of December, a total
of 170 heavy-freight trains were operated as carriers of 226,841 tons.

BEGINS BERLIN-PRAGUE EXPRESS RUN -- Berlin, Nachrichten fuer Aussenhandel,
30 Dec 50
On 21 December 1950, the Berlin Reichsbahn Directorate started operation of
the first express rail-motor car for the Berlin-Prague run. With stops at Dres-
den-Neustadt and Bad Schandau, the express is scheduled to reach Prague in 6 hours.
Passengers boarding the train in Berlin must have a special.permit.

STANDARDIZES RATES OF NARROW-GAUGE RAILROADS -- Berlin, Nachrichten fuer
Aussenhandel, 3 Jan 51
On 1 January, Reichsbahn rates becsme effective for passenger service
on narrow-gauge railroads in the German Democratic Republic. AU East Ger-
man narrow-gauge railroads recently passed from private ownership into
Reichsbahn control.
