THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION EAST GE" GLASSWORKS EXPAND PRODUCTION INCREASES OUTPUT 150 PERCENT -- Berlin, Nachrichten fuer Aussenhandel, 13 Dec 50 The Torgau Plate-Glass Works, East Germany's second largest plant of its kind, has increased its production 150 percent since 1945. Since the installa- tion, in 1948, of a new crucible with six furnaces, the plant's output has been three fifths greater than in 1946, when it was on a par with prewar production. Large export shipments have been made to Austria, Bulgaria, and West Ger- many, as well as to the Scandinavian countries. The quality of the product has improved considerably since 1949. Adequate supplies of raw materials, for the most part of indigenous origin, are available. PRODUCES SHATTERPROOF GLASS -- Berlin, Nachrichten fuer Aussenhandel, 20 Dec 50 e paoplc-,^.-yed Glassworks in Aiken/Elbe, which started operation in July 1950, will be enlarged considerably under the Five-Year Plan. Priority will be given to the production of shatterproof glass for motor vehicles and train win- dows, and to the expansion of glass processing. Production of heavy glass was started in November.and a new plate..tass polishing shop will be put in operation in January. The plant, which employs 300 workers, has orders for exports to Ru- mania and Sweden. GLASSWORKS INCREASES SALES -- Berlin, Nachrichten fuer Aussenhandel, 20 Dec 50 The Derenburg People-Owned Glassworks, one of the enterprises of the VVB Building Materials in Sachsen-Anhalt, has increased its sales by one third. As of 1 January 1951, the people-owned Harz Hollow Glass Industry in Wenigerode will be consolidated with the Derenburg Glassworks. Smeltery in Berlin is the only plant in East Ger- many which produces quartz glass for laboratory equipment. Rock crystal, the raw material used, has to be imported.
