PERMITS ENTRY OF RAZOR BLADES.

In Rumania, the area sown to cotton in 1947 totaled 23,532 hectares. In
1950, cotton plantings increased to 100,000 hectares and the yields increased
to 400 kilograms per hectare for upland (rain-grown) cotton ana to 600 kilograms
for irrigated cotton. The gross cotton production in the stabs sector exceeded,
the production in the private sector by 50 percent. The Soviet Union supplied. .
Rumania with modern agricultural machinery, seeds, chemical fertilizer, and nd-
vice;~all of which contributed to the increase in the cotton crop.
The 1950 harvest exceeded the 1949 harvest by ?31 percent. The new Soviet
cotton variety, "Odessa," hss been iatmdnced~into Rumania. This variety has
given yields up +..0 900 kilograms per hectare. The Central Committee 'of the Ruma-
nian Workers' Party plans b ~ilgate 1,200,000 hectares during the next 10 years.
This irrigation protect will be in conJunction with the electrification plan;
much of the area will be sown to cotton.
In 1951, the area to be covered with chemical fertilizers will be 24,100
hectares; in 1955 this will be increased to 70,200 hectares. Machinery will be
used to sow 54,000 hectares in 1951, increasing to'185,000 hectares in 1955?
During the Five-Year Plan, 25 seed-selection stations will be set up to handle
90 percent of the seed to be sown. By the end of the Five-Year Plan, the area
sown to cotton will reach 300,000 hectares,

Rumania has recently pgrmitted small packages to enter the country. The
'mast popular packages contain Gillette-type razor blades which, because of the
consumers' goods shortage, can be sold fox 10,000 lei per hundred, enough money
to keep a man alive for a mpnth.
