MINING OPERATIONS BEING EXPANDED -- Sarajevo, Oslobodjenje, 1 Apr 51
Vares, 31 March -- Work is being completed in Vares on a project to ex-
pand mining in Yugoslavia. Three iron mines, in Smreka, Droskovac, and Brezik,
will be opened, and within 3 years are expected to produce 1,700,000 tons yearly.
A small part of the ore will satisfy the needs of the ironworks in Vares, and the
remainder will go to the blast furnaces now being built in Zenica.
Mining and transportation of the ore will be mechani Rd. A 19-kilometer-
long, standard-gauge railroad now being built from Breza to Vares will have 20
tunnels through the rocky mountains and a 42-meter-high viaduct. An electric
assembly and transformer"station is also being built. 'Waste material will be
carried by cableway to nearby low areas.
A loading station in Droskovac will cost about 120 million dinars. The pres-
ent road through Vares will be relocated to provide more space for industrial
installations. The creek running along the road will be filled in and a canal
built instead.
BAUXITE TO BE MINED -- Koper, Istraki* 'ednik, 18 Mar 51
Five rich bauxite-ore deposits were found recently near the villages of
Zakinj and Seget. Bauxite mining in these areas. will begin in April 1951.
Recently, bauxite ore was discovered in Buj Srez near the villages of Lov-
retica and Marusici. Chemical analysis lies shown that the ore is of good qual-
ity. The "Boxit" (Bauxite) Srez Enterprise, which was established recently, will
continue prospecting for bauxite in that area.
