RESEARCH WORK AT THE LENINGRAD POLYTECHNICAL INSTITUTE
Scientists at the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute imeni Kalinin, together
with all scientists in the USSR, are working enthusiastically on the complex
problems connected with the immense building projects of the Stalin epoch.
An enormous amount of work has been done by the chairs of the engineering
construction, electromechanics, electric machine'building, and hydromelioration
(irrigation and soil improvement) faculties. The chair of hydraulics under
Professor Chertousov has begun research on models of individual. parts of the
Volga hydroelectric power stations. Professor Belov's chair, has been trying to
find.he best methods of building foundations and substructures for future sta-
tions. For many years the chair of hydraulic machines, under the direc lion of
Docent Gur'yev, has been studying hydraulic turbine runners in collaboration
with the Leningrad Plant imeni Stalin. Their studies are now being utilized in
solving the more complicated problems relating to very high-power hydraulic tur-
bines with adjustable blades. The chair is also developing new heavy-duty pro-
peller pumps which will be used extensively in the vater-power and irrigation
projects now under construction.
The chair of high-voltage engineering is working on extremely important
problems, Professor Gorev, Stalin Prize Laureate, and Professor Zalesskiy, in
collaboration-with a collective group of the Leningrad "Elektroapparat" Plant,
are designing equipment for high-voltage circuits, e.g., oil-circuit breakers,
disconnecting switches, lightning arresters, etc. They are also investigating
methods for power transmission over very long distances. Thiewgtck.A'x,especially
important in planning and building the Kuybyshev-Moscow and Stalingrad-Moscow
power-transmission* lineso
In the friction and lubrication laboratory, Professor Zaytsev is examining
problems connected'vith the construction of high-power generator bearings.
special machine for this purpose has been installed in the laboratory.
