Three thouspnd physicians are needed in the German Democratic Republic.
Every effort is being made to lure medical doctors from West Germany
Young graduate physicians, having completed one year's internship, can im-
mediately secure posts in East German hospitals as assistant medical chiefs, at
salaries of 500-1,200- East marks, Although, at unofficial exchange rates,
this equals or Ty 120-?2140 Deutsche marks (West), doctors are enabled to maintain
a higher living standard in the German Democratic. Republic, since they are pro-
vided with housing facilities and, in some cases, with more adequate nutrition
than was available to them in West Germany.

An epidemic of rabies has broken out in Mecklenburg. In several sectors
of the land, persons have been a?;tacked by rabid dogs. As a protective measure,
children of the Schoenberg district are being kept out of school.
