Moscewy Trudy 20 Apr 51 Scrap-metal collectier, is progX~eacing. ^_'ransp^riaticn of scrap requires an enormous number of ?rail.rcad carat' and, is this connection, the briquetting of metal shavings has become increasingly Imr?crtant. Before the wart USSh trachine-banding plants accumuleted up to one mil- lion tons of metal shavings per yeas.. Accord?.ng to estimates of the Mi istry of Ferrous Metallurgy, the sc?rRp meta:i. was shipped over an avere~e distance oY 6;35 ki.lometera. Steel shavings had to be crushed before shipping, and this process required much time and labor When shipped over ong distances, a large amount of the sha.vinga were subjected to cr,?r?rosion and became uselees. Soviet technicians have discovered a ne?sr method of briquetting metal shavings by adding a binding substance to the metal. shavings before pressing This method was tested by the "Kompressor" Plant in Moscow. The briquettes consisted of the following mi..xture; 100 weight units of" shavings were com- bined with 15-?0 un1:.s of gr~wid limestone and 1.2-1~5 units of cement. P':esa- Sn~g was done by friction presses. The finished trignettes had a strength of 55-~ kilograms par square centimeter> One 100-tcn press can process 15000 tone of shavings per year Ohe of the Moscow plants of "Glavvtormet" (Main Administration I~f Pro- curements Processing, and Sale of Scrag Metal) is now making experiments in briquette production. The maximum productivity of briquette machines at this plant reached 250 kilograms of pig-iron shavings or 350 kilograms of steel shavings per hour.' By operating two shiftst the yearly output would be 1,000 - 1,500 tons Plants which accumulate about 4,000 tons of metal in a year should install presses with a capacity of 180 - 300 tons. Briquetting of metal shav- ings should be organized at all machine-building planta~ in this way, addi- tional hundreds of thousands of tons of scrap metal could be recovered each year. - 1 - S~Y~6.
