UNREST DEPORTATIONS IN BULGARIA NOTED
Athens -- The second phase of the Kostov affair in Bulgaria is now being
awaited. Actually the atmosphere in that country is not favorable to the Com-
munist administrators, and it is believed that the Chervenkov government will
be forced to adopt a policy of waiting. The Soviets are naturally not pleased
by this decision and have insisted that a violent purge be conducted in the
government ranks. They have, in fact, acted directly in the affair, sending
specialists to the country to conduct the desired purge, the aim of which is a
strong Bulgarian Communist Party.
The names of those already purged are noteworthy: Petko Kunin and Manoal
Sakelarov, former cabinet ministers; Ivan Maslarov and Petur Semerdiev, former
members of the Central Committee; General Penev, commander of People's Militia;
General Slavcho Trnski, Third Army Commander; Anton Yugov, former Deputy Pre-
mier; and Dobri Terpeshev, former head of the State Planning Commission. More-
over, G. Tsankov has been sent to Sofia from Moscow to replace Interior Minis-
ter Rusi Khristozov.
The list of people purged could be extended even more, and new purges are
expected. The members of the Bulgarian Communist Party are decreasing in num-
bers daily. Opposition to the government is increasing, and the people seem
confused by the war preparations which the Soviets have had the Bulgarian gov-
ernment undertake. Although the official propaganda organization constantly
speaks of peace, war materiel continues to arrive. The people are quite aware
that Moscow's aim is to convert Bulgaria into a Soviet province.
To combat the spirit of resistance among the people, the Sofia government
has decided.to arm the active members of the Communist Party. The reliable
elements of the party are being organized into units which shadow, arrest and
deport suspicious persons. The Communists are also posting in every town lists
of suspected individuals. The purpose of these black lists is to forestall any
possible fifth column in the event of war.

Mass deportations have begun in the border regions. The populations of
the villages of Albanitsa, Zeskovo, Santovo, Koprivlen, and Gornakov in Nevro-
kop (now Gotse Delchev) Okoliya have been transferred to northern Bulgaria.
Inhabitants of the Khaskovo and Kurdzhali okoliyas have been sent elsewhere in
cattle cars. Ten families from the village of Ardino and 40 from Momchilgrad
Okoliya have been deported. The people deported are being sent to areas such
as Dobrudzha, Silistra, Ruse, and Tutrakan.
