POLYMETALLIC ORE MINES IN xa~nxxSTAN
LACK MECHANIZATION; PRODUCTIVITY LOW
ZYRYANOVSK MINE LAOS -- Alma-Ata, Kazakhstanskaya Pravda, 10 May 51
The Zyryanovsk Mine in Kazakh SSR hoe been very slow in mechanizing its under-
ground mining operatione~ Only drilling operations have been completely mechanized.
However, it would be entirely possible to convert all hauling operations in the mine
to electric traction, as there is sufficient electric power, as well as a sufficient
number of electric mine locomotives and other equipment.
So far, mechanized hauling has been introduced only on trio levels. Preparations
for the operation of storage battery mine locomotives on the 21st level have been
continuing for about a year. Meanwhile, miners have to push the cars by hand for
500 meters or more from the drift which passes through the counterlode. All of the
hauling on the first, second, and third levels of the Meslyanekaya shaft is done by
hand. However,~even in those parts of the mine which use mechanized hauling,
electric mine locomotives are operated inefficiently. The tracks are in poor
condition and cars often run off the rails. As an example of the bad condition
of mine tracks, it might be mentioned that in hauling ore on the 18th levees the
train is accompanied by six men whose only duty it is to pick up the cars which
have run off the rails.
The loading of ore in the stopes is also not mechanized throughout the mine,
although sufficient machines are available for this purpose. Four machines are ,
completely idle. Two loading machines have been lowered to the second level of
Maslyanskaya shaft, but'they have not been in use for a long time. Loading of rock
and ore is done by hand.
Cutting operations in the crosscut under the Kapital'naya shaft have been. very
slow. The miners had pledged to cut 25 running meters per month. Actually, they
have been doing only about half of that amount.
Mechanical removal of ore in the?working faces is badly organized. Machines
are not properly taken care of and arr constantly out of order..

Zyryanovsk Mine have caused yexcessiveyuse of labor in the mining of ore.
Labor productivity of miners in the drift-cutting group is only 61.7 percent
of the planned productivity. Although the mine is now fulfilling its plan
for ore extraction, huge reserves still remain unutilized.
The Zyryanovsk Mine has rich possibilities for a further increase in the
extraction of ore. To achieve this, wide mechanization of labor processes and
complete utilization of all available equipment is necessary. All miners must
be trained in the use of mining machine.
CRITICIZES LENINOGORSK MINE -- Alma-Ata, Kazakhstanskaya Pravda, 12 Jun 51
In May 1951, the Leninogorsk Mine proved to be one of the most backward
enterprises of Vostochno-Kazakhstan Oblast. The mine completed only 80 per-
cent of the May plan and failed to .deliver to the state many thousand tons of
ore. At present, not a single mine sector or shift is fulfilling its plans.
This lag in production is caused by the indifferent attitude of the mine manage-
. went towards mining technology, and the inadequate use of machinery in working
faces and in filling and sinking operations.
Strange as it may seem, the use of mechanical equipment has been decreasing
from month to month. In February and March, about 40 percent of all ore loading
was done by machines, in April 31.8 percent, and in May,_ 30 percent. According
to the state pla'e, 75 percent of ore-removing and filling operations should be
mechanized.
A large number of machines have been idle at the mine. Out of 27 available
scraper winches only 16 are operating, and even these are not being utilized at
full capacity. Each winch loads an average of 13 tons of ore per shift, instead
of 3~+ tons as planned. In some mine sectors their productivity is even lower;
for example, ~n Sector 1 the winch loads not more than 6 tons of ore per shift.
That is one ton less than the amount which could be loaded by hand. This mine
sector operated worse than any of the others during May and completed only 70
' percent of the plan. In Sector 6, only two out of four winches are being used.
Mine director Mikhaylenko and chief engineer Tuseyev are paying no attention
. to the mechanization of mining operations. An example should be taken from.the
neighboring So'kol'nyy Mine. Here, ore removal is com00Oetons ofcoreiper~montheach
of the complex mining brigades is producing up to 5,
Working conditions at the Leninogorsk Mine have'not improved in June, and
the mine still fails to mget its plans. The failure to use machinery ?.s becoming
more and more general. ?On ~ June, for example, one of the shifts in Sector 2
completed only 24 percent of the plan: This was due to the fact that most of
the workers were busy reloading ore while the scraper winch was idle all the time.
For the same reason, the 'plan was not met in Sector 5.
