It hsa no name yet, but its builders tslready call it Pyatimorsk (City of Five Seas), because the city will serve as a port for ships sailing on five seas, namely, the Black, Azov, Caspian, Baltic, and White seas, The block of 20 buildings which are being erected in the center of the future city are expected to be completed in July.(1) The town is being built on the Volga's left bank, at the confluence of the Akhtuba River. The mein street will be extended as a highway to connect the town with the main construction project of the new Stalingrad GES. 'The two- and four-story buildings now under construction are of a permanent nature, as they eventually will be occupied by the personnel of the hydroelectric power plant now being built. In the: meantime, the houses will be occupied by builders: A hotel with 160 rooms, sn administration building, a technical .school, and a club with an auditorium for 800 persons will be located in the center of the town.(2) The first block of permanent brick houses with a total living apace oP 10,000 square meters is now under construction and is expected to be completed within 3 months. It is estimated that by 1954 the city will have 65,000 in- habitants.(3) In connection with the construction oP the Kuybyshev GES, the present site of the city of Stavropol' will be flooded permanently and, consequently, the city will have to be moved to a new aite.(4) Near the site of the Puture Kuybyshev GES, several workmen's settlements late],y have develaped.(5) One of them is located on the high left bank of tie Volga River, on the 'site of the former small village of Kuneyevka, and it is called Komsomol"'"sk on the Volga by its builders.(6) Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/25: CIA-RDP80-00809A000600400806-2 SECCEY S-E-C-R-E-T The special comriittee to select a site for the first city on the Main Turk- men Canal has completed its work, It was decided to build the city north of the Takhia-Tash promontory. The plan of the city ie being prepared by the best architects of Moscow, Leningrad, and Tashkent.(7) In Estonia, the new city oP Kokhtla-Yarve developed on the site of a small, insignificant village. At present, the new city has tihree schools, a movie house, a miners' club, aid eight nurseries. A modern hospital was completed in 1950.(8) The new city of Pechora was built during the postwar Five-Year Plan. It is situated on the Pechora River at the point where the railroad crosses that river. The city serves mainly as a transshipping point for the coal mined at the Vorkuta mine.(9) A new settlement for workers of the "Taentroener?pmontazh" Trust of the Ministry of Electric Power Stations USSR has grown near the L'obnya railroad station, 28 kilometers from Moscow. So far, 56 one- and two-story houses have been completed. A movie house to seat 200 persons, a library, a restaurant, e post off ice,~a drug store, and a hotel are nearing completion. It is expected that in 1952 the settlement will be enlarged by 12 two-story apartment houses and other buildings.(10) In the Valkskiy Rayon of Latviit, preliminary work Yor the construction of kolkhoz villages started during the :+inter so that scores of houses could be moved to their new sites this spring. So Par, over 120 houses have been moved, and~it is expected that from 130 to 280 more will be moved before the sowing season. Most of the houses were dismantled and put together again on the new sites, and a few were moved on rollers toyed by trectora.(11} Although the town of Kalininsk does not appear on the map of the USSR, it actually exists and is developing rapidly. The new town is located betveen Nikitovka and Khatsapetovka in the Ukraine. During the past 3 years, more than 100,000 square meters of housing vere built in Kalininsk, and 80,000 square meters of roads and sidewalks vere paved and asphalted. Large vorkers' settle- mznts have developed, including Oktyabr'ekiy, Pervomayskiy, and Sotsgorodok. About 2,000 vorkers have built their own homes there. A regular bus line op- ' eratea betveen individual mines, and the plants are connected with the town by streetcar. It is planned to build an asphalt highway to Gorlovka end Yenekiyevo. (12} In the suburban district of Moscow, not Par from the nev site of the Moscow University, a nev town of neat-looking, prefabricated, two-story houses, erected along vide streets lately has developed. Several thousand vorkers live in the town. At present, eight multistory houses are under construction, and two schools, e club, hospital, and a kindergarten are nearing completion. In the near future, it is planned to start the construction of an additional 30 multistory buildings with a total floor space of 40,000 square metere.(13) The Moscow suburban village of Kozhukhovo has added asphalt-surfaced streets, green parks, and tall buildings. At present, three buildings of six, eight and nine stories, respectively, are being added to the living apace of the village. The three buildings consist altogether of 178 apartments which are earmarked for teachers, construction vorkers, and their familiea.(14) ' Construction of a nev small town of scientists is beginning in the village of Pavlovo, formerly Koltushi, where many laboratoriea.of the Institute of Physiology imeni I. P. Pavlov are located. "Lenakademproyekt" ~eningrad Office of the Academy of Sciences Planning Trust has been authorized to work out de- tailed plans for the construction, building rights, and landscaping of this large center of physiological science.
