The Central Dosarm Radio Club and the editors of Radio held an all-Mosqow
conference of televiewers and radio amateurs working in television. The meet-
ing was opened by I. A. Tsingnvatov, chief of the Main Administration of
Broadcasting Stations, Ministry of Communications, who spoke on.the work of
the Moscow'Television Center. About 10% of the television receivers in the
Moscow area were built by radio amateurs. Over 15% of the televiewers live
outside Moscow. The zone 5ad'iu] of reliable reception of the Moscow Center
extends to 100 kilometers. Tsingovatov emphasized the important role of radio
amateurs in studying the possibilities of long-rsnge television reception'and
noted the good work done in this field by the radio amateurs of Ryazan' and
Tula.
G. S. Savel'yev, chief of the Technical Administration, M. istry of the
Communications Equipment Industry, reported on the prospective development of
the television, transwitting network. Equipment for the Kiev. Television Center
must be developed in 1951, Prototypes of television transmitters for televi-
sion centers of union republic capitals and ls?ge regicnal centers are being
developed. One of the scientific-research institutes of he ministry is devel-
oping Soviet equipment for color television.
According to Savel'yev, the 1951 production of television receivers will
be two and a half times that of 1950. Along with mass-produced third-class
television receivers, second-class receivers, with picture dimensions 1.30 x
180 mm and equipped with broadcast receivers, and also first-class receivers,
with picture dimensions 180 x 240 mm, are scheduled for production. The lat-
ter sets will include an all-wave superheterodyne receiver and a phonograph
attachment. The year 1951 will also see an increase in the production of
kinescopes, components, and tubes.
Savel'yev reported that the most diff'.ult technical problem facing So-
viet radio designers is the development of an imni~ved television receiver.
This sts, tement was corroborated at the meeting, because almost everycne.who
spoke criticized sharply the quality of television' receiving equipment pro-
duced by plants of the Ministry of the Communications Equipment Industry and
demanded that measures by taken promptly to improve this situation.
