On 1 June 1951, the Riesa branch of the USU (Central Office of German Water
Transport and Transshipping) entered into a 90-day competition with the trans-
portation division of the Riess Steel and Rolling Mills, aimed at speeding up
transshipping operations, lo,-ring transportation costs, and increasing the
volume of water freight.
The competition proved that the DSU is not yet in a position to cope with
the transportation needs of the steel plant Inadequate cargo space on the
available vessels made it impossible to carry out deliveries of goods on sched-
ule.. Only about 30 percent of the total water freight could be loaded directly
from railroad cars to ships The fact that only one suitable crane was avail-
able for transshipping operations presented a further problem. Nevertheless,
it was possible to reduce the cost of transshipping operations by 6,440 Deutsche
marks, a saving of 25,000 Deutsche marks per year
The competition resulted in a 45-percent increase in water freight. Con-
sequently, the transportation plan was not only exceeded, but valuable freight-
car space was made available for other purposes
According to Director-General Keul (fnu) of the Schiffahrt (Water Trans-
port) Directorate, construction of a fleet for commerce with East Asia is to
begin in 1952. The designs and shop drawings for the first steamer are now
being prepared.
