THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION DISCUSS RISTAIICE, EX LL POLITICAL ACTIVITY Recent arrivals from Albania report that the domestic situation has deter- iorated in the past few weeks. Requisitions by the Hoxha government of vast quantities of food, especially olive oil, for the USSR have caused the virtual disappearance of fox= from the market. This situation has produced strong reactions, but attempts to take any sort of action have been too sporadic to be effective, and have often been mo- tivated by personal rather than patriotic reasons. Consequently, the police have been able to put down these revolts very easily. On 14 January 1952, the Albanian radio announced that workers in the Patos oil field had succeeded in ?utt, ing out a fire there, caused by lightning, with- out damage to the wells. This may have been a case of sabotage. During the celebration of the 39th anniversary of Albanian independence .in Rome7, the venerable prt, riot, Mehdi Fasheri, exhorted the Albanians to unite and to look toward she West, since Soviet ideology could bring only ruin. His words aroused great interest not only in the country Itself but among Al- banian refugees abroad who see the necessity of a union, without distinction, of all Albanians if Albania is to liberated from Cominform tyranny. It is noteworthy that the Committee for a Free Albania, which claims to represent all classes and all political movements in Albania opposed to Com- munism, has recognized, altYnugh indirectly, the need of encouraging the var- ious political currents in order to accelerate the fall of the Hoxha regime.
